Stacking Archetypes of the same class

OK, there are a few classes which can be "stacked" in archetypes.

As I understand the typical multi-class situation, when you gain a second (or more) class, you get the BAB and saving throw modifiers from that class added, as well as all the other class features.

So, for instance, if you were a Paladin 2, Monk 2, with a 14 CHA, you would get the +2 BAB, 3 0 3 base saves of the Paladin, plus divine grace for +2 to all saves, plus the +1 BAB for the 2nd Level monk and 3 3 3 saves. Adding it all up you get +3 BAB and 8 5 8 for saves.

My question is this: what happens when you take the same class, but it is an archetype of one you already have? Do you get the first level bonuses? Or do you continue as if you progressed a level for BAB and saves?

For instance, let's say there are three monk archetypes which all can be taken somehow (two is easily doable, as I understand it). Can you be a 3rd level monk with +0 BAB and 6 6 6 for saves? Or do you come out as a +2 BAB and 3 3 3 for saves? Is it "true multi-classing" or simply taking archetypes of the same class, and the class progresses as normal, and if so, what effective level is used for the various archetypes (are they all level 3 monks now? or is one archetype considered only level 2 and the other level 1?)?

What I've read states you pick the archetype at level 1... but then how do you get multiple archetypes for the same class? You do it all at level 1? And then ALL the archetypes progress as you level?

I'm just unsure how the archetypes stack, any pointers and directions for this would help, thanks.

Archetypes basically swap out or change class features of the class they modify. In general you can't take multiple archetypes that modify the same class feature. Regardless if you are applying one archetype or 10 these must all be chosen when you take your 1st level in the class. So, if you had 10 levels in class X and then you decided to take a level in class Y with 3 archetypes you would have specify all 3 archetypes when you take that first level in class Y when your character is 11th level.

Now, once you set those archetypes they can not be changed without DM approval. If in the previous example you then took 2 more levels in class X and then another level in class Y, you're stuck with whatever decisions you made before and now you would just be 13 levels in class X and 2 levels in class Y. Class Features like base attack and saving throws simply add together.

You can not Say, Take levels in class A with archetype B and then take levels in Class A with archetype D.

I hope that helps. I avoided using specfic classes or achetypes in order to cut down on the confusion. Also, in order to keep someone from jumping in and saying "You know actually those 2 archetypes don't stack because of...."

Archetypes are not a separate class from the base class and taking archetypes is not multi-classing.

Each archetype has class features that replace or modify certain class features of the base class. All other features of the base class progress as normal when leveling. As the character levels, the character levels in the base class, and then applies whatever archetype replacements or modifications are indicated for that level. The character cannot have two archetypes of a class that replace or modify the same class feature.

You cannot multiclass into the same class with a different archetype.

All archetypes must for any given class must be taken with the first level of that class. No two archetypes can modify the same class feature.

The one exception to the rule about selecting all of your archetypes for a given class at 1st level is that you can defer selecting an archetype if you have not yet reached a level at which it alters or replaces a class feature.

For example, the there are archetypes for the Rogue class that each replace Uncanny Dodge (received at 4th level) and Improved Uncanny Dodge (received at 8th level) and no other class feature, so you could choose to take one of those archetypes any time before you reach 4th level.

Thank you all, this made it all much clearer for me. The next question I would ask is if a Brawler Strangler / Snakebite Striker (which I understand don't replace any of the same Brawler class features) gets 2d6 Sneak Attack at level 1? 1d6 for strangling and 1d6 normal? That seems to be what happens, but I am still not 100% sure about the whole "replaces" and "stacking" of abilities for archetypes when there are more than one being taken in a class. Since one is called "Strangle" and the other is "SA". Thanks! (So at level 2 Brawler S/SS you'd be doing 1d6 SA, plus 2d6 SA when grappling)

Both those archetypes alter your class skills, so you can not take them both.
