Cayden Cailean and drugs

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I was thinking, since alcohol is technically a drug do Cailean's followers do other drugs? I would think most don't but there are a few sects (widely considered heretical) who do use drugs.

Cayden Cailean support for drinking comes from the socialization and merriment it brings. He does not support drinking alone or to drown one's sorrows, and despises mean drunks who hurt others in their drunkenness. I believe with other drugs it would be similar: it matters why are you doing this, and what are its effects.

I think the Cailean belief is to use booze to become your best self, which when you think about it is probably really really hard.

I don't know what sort of doobie could inspire someone to heroics, but I've read tales where hashish was used to enable psychic powers or visions. I imagine that acid could be used the same way. Perhaps it's a little introspective for the Drunken Hero, but I think it's relevant.

I was in a PFS adventure once where to get to another plane we had to perform a magic ritual. You know, invocations, candles, sitting in a circle, the works. Seems very lawful, ordered, right? This sounds weird, but maaaybe a devout Caydenite could get the same effect by taking a lot of the right sorts of drugs and praying.

Liberty's Edge

It seems to me that drug addiction is a sort of slavery, and Cayden Cailean despises slavery. But I don't think he would object to an occasional indulgence.

My Least Favorite Deity In Terms Of How He Was Implemented seems to tiptoe around this one... given the legal issues surrounding recreational drug use in the country where Paizo does most of its business, that's kind of understandable.

But I will say, from a basic "how his basket case of a faith seems to operate" level that solitary drug use to escape life's troubles is very much not what they're about.

Passing a joint around at a party seems in keeping with the basic ethos.

Getting utterly slammed on heroin to the point where you're basically not there is a different matter entirely, even if you're doing it around people you like.

Well, alcohol is certainly addictive.

Some followers might object, but Cailean is god of freedom.

I do not think he minds, if it does not become addiction and hinder persons ability to do good.

I think he would frown
