Exocortex and Cyberborn

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

I was wondering if the Mechanic's Exocortex counts as a cybernetic augmentation for the Cyberborn theme? Specifically, would it count for the Self-Hacker ability, with the Exocortex level being your mechanic level?

I wouldn't think so. It is never called out as such so at the very least talk to your GM about it, it would be a pretty useful trick if you can get the OK.

I think the themes are supposed to be class agnostic so that there is no clear advantage to any class for taking one over the other. As such I do not believe that any theme abilities would affect and class abilities.

I think the bigger problem would be "Why would anyone *ever* want to disable their own exocortex?" Even if it were an allowable interpretation, it would be an incredibly stupid idea to actually use such.

The exocortex isn't a cybernetic augmentation, only cybernetic augmentation (under equipment) are cybernetic augmentation.

Liberty's Edge

I thought that would be the case.

I guess the same would apply to the custom rig too then.

I agree. But this was a question about the Self-Hacker theme ability, which allows you to "overclock one of your cybernetic augmentations" to regain stamina points, not disable it.

The custom rig is specifically called out as being able to be installed as a cybernetic augmentation though, personally I'd allow you to overclock the custom rig as an augmentation, not sure if it should be level 1 or your character level though.

If you do want to allow the custom rig, counting it as level 1 until you get to higher level when it starts counting as a more powerful computer where you count it as its new effective level might work. The exocortex probably as equal to your level.
