Suggestions for Mass Suggestion (good in-combat uses for the spell)

Advice

So! One of my players' favorite recurring foes ('favorite') has recently leveled up and gotten their hands on the Mass Suggestion spell.

What are some ways for them to use this spell in mid-battle to make the PCs regret trying to fight an enchanter?

Miscellaneous notes:

  • Both sides know each other pretty well by now.
  • Villain is a half-succubus priestess of Calistria.
  • As GM, I am the final arbiter of what is or is not a 'reasonable' suggestion, but I prefer to take a restrained interpretation of the rules.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

some things I've seen written for suggestion in an adventure path at some point has been something along teh lines of "your armor might encumber you, you should take it off so you don't fall/can move faster/ can swim easier."

other ideas are "retreat, this is a risky fight" if the party doesn't always get along, "X is going to betray you/ has been mind controlled, don't trust them." can throw some chaos into things, if not always lead to true in fighting. something along the lines of, "a bunch more enemies are about to come through that door, you should stop them." if you really want to mess with them, a suggestion of, "I'm not the real enchanter! she's mind controlled me!" can sow some discord.

the more the villain can get personal with the party the better, pit their egos against each other, play on their charity or instincts, and of course it's fairly well documented that succubi like to suggest things of a passionate nature.

Group together for safety... (assuming you have a nice AoE spell ready for them)

Spread out quickly... (assuming you have some minions with reach for tons of AAOs)

Cover your eyes there is a medusa...(assuming you have a rogue minion with some nice sneak attack dice to hit now 'blinded' pcs)

Charge! (works nicely with traps or minions with readied actions)

You're on fire! (assuming they will take the action to put themselves out )

Is there a decent benchmark for what the actual limitations of suggestion actually are. I've been put off using it ever since I had a DM quibble about what it could do until uselessness.

Edit: The spell Triggered suggestion says this.

For example, you could use triggered suggestion on a palace guard to make him attack the king the next time he and the king are alone, and the guard would not remember the suggestion to do so until the trigger occurred.
