Echolocation / Tremorsense comparison

Advice

Anyone have much experience using these abilities? What is the difference between the two? How would you get best use out of these two abilities (assuming you also have the ability to burrow). From my understanding it almost sounds as if Echolocation is much better, do these two work hand in hand?

hmmm?

Echolocation grants blindsight - meaning you can target an individual you cannot otherwise see with no penalty as long as you have line of effect.

Tremorsense requires the subject to be in contact with ground and only allows you to pinpoint the square they are in (as per blind sense). It does not allow you to target them. However tremorsense doesn't necessarily require line of effect - you should be able to detect someone the other side of a wall.

Blindsight is almost always superior if you have to choose one, but if you can have tremorsense up as well then all the better.

If you are burrowing though, tremorsense may well be slightly better due to the line of effect limitation of blindsight.

In Rise of the Rune Lords, I play a Bard where I use Echolocation a lot. I have used it against a Dragon that cast a blinding storm on the group. With Echolocation up, my normal vision was useless. Still, I was able to get in the 40 foot range and hit the dragon with Deafing Sound Burst several times.

I have used the same spell against a Lich who had Mirror Image and Dispacement. The Echolocation was fooled by neither.

Echolocation is useless for a creature that is burrowing. Tremorsense is the only thing I know that allows a burrowing creature to perceive things while burrowing.

As to working together they are totally separate so are more complementary than additive. Having both will mean that there are fewer situations where you cannot perceive your target.
