Does Sunder Permanently Destroy

Rules Questions

Sorry for the noob question, but I guess I've never seen in come up in play.

If you sunder an item, particularly a magic item, is it permanently and irrevocably destroyed?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'll assume you mean "sunder it until it hits 0 hp."

The answer is no, assuming you have all the pieces of the item. For a non-magic item you can just use the mending cantrip. For a magic item you need make whole (if your caster level is at least twice that of the item) or greater make whole (if your caster level is at least equal to that of the item) or memory of function (regardless of caster level). Once you've gotten the item up to 1 hp, mending can take it the rest of the way.

Note that greater make whole and memory of function are from the Technology Guide and thus may be unavailable in a game that doesn't include lazors and other whoop-shooping.

One thing to keep in mind is that Mending has a weight limit of 1 lb per caster level. Higher level spells can accommodate much larger objects.
