Chains of Light

Rules Questions

I had a question in regards to Chains of Light. How would this spell work vs constructs, golems, dragons, undead and oozes? Since they are infact immune to paralysis would none of the chains effects work on those creatures or would the dimensional anchor still work?

These creatures would be immune to the paralysis effect, but would still be held in place and subject to dimensional anchor since those are separate from the paralysis the spell inflicts.

Oh I thought "held in place" was for flavor, so when they are held in place can they basically do anything from that square except for move out of it? Ie they are free to cast spells, full attack, etc?

...At the risk of getting into very pedantic reading of this, I'm not quite sure Dasrak is right.

The wording on this spell is similar to Hold Person. In fact, Chains of Light appears to operate as basically 'Hold Person or Hold Monster but targeting a different Save, as a Good-aligned effect, and preventing certain forms of escape. Also the repeat-save on Chains of Light does not appear to take an Action, unlike the Hold spells.' Nothing in the Hold spells lets a character take physical actions.

My reading is that since constructs, golems, dragons, undead, plants, and oozes are Immune to Paralyzed... Chains of Light does very little, if anything, to them.

This still leaves a spell that paralyzes Abberations, Fey, Humanoids, Monstrous Humanoids, Outsiders, and Vermin. That's a huge list of foes, and includes some real nasty customers you'd want to put in holy-chains ASAP including Demons, Daemons, and Devils.

It would be my understanding that this spell Is designed to effect the above list.

Chains of Light is a conjuration (creation) spell. It creates a physical chain (made of light), that binds its victims.

Hold Person is an enchantment (compulsion) [mind-affecting] Spell, that the above list are unaffected by.

What would that "held in place" condition do? Like is he still able to full attack?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It's not a technical term, so the normal English meaning applies: no moving (or being moved) from where you are. That is, you're stuck in whatever square(s) you're in.

EDIT: Yes, you can still make a full attack. The paralysis part of the spell is supposed to eliminate that option, of course.

Good ole reliable Fuzzy Wuzzy, thanks
