Hey All, I have a question. Are there any ill effects for an evil person casting Protection Vs. Evil on itself> I say no, but others in my group say yes. I see it as just because I'm evil doesn't mean I can't protect myself from external evil & my internal evil has nothing to do with it. I mean, I am not attacking myself...so...
The reason I ask is because I LOVE PF Necromancers (they are better than any edition of every RPG I played. In my opinion) & I usually play the Lawful Evil type & the DM felt I can't Cast Protection Vs Evil without taking penalties while it's up & I call BS on that.
Thank You

No physical harm within the rules. Bad guys with magical circles of protection from evil to control the demons they're summoning is pretty standard.
However, it is a 'Good' aligned spell, so clerics of Evil gods aren't likely to be able to cast it. Also, there might be psychological side-effects, such as the caster gradually getting less evil (just as good guys might turn bad if they cast Evil spells all the time).

Just think that Devils LE and Demons CE are enemies of each other, if they are fighting each other don't you think that protection of evil would be useful for them to have up?
To be fair, there is Protection from Law and Protection from Chaos. Of course, if you're dealing with Daemons then you'd have to go with Protection from Evil.
In any case, the answer to the question is a very simple one. Protection from Evil doesn't state that it has any downsides when applied to evil creatures it is cast upon, so it doesn't negatively affect them.
