Catfolk Samurai

Advice

So currently im playing a Tengu-claric lvl 3/trickster and air domain.
I want to make a more combat front-line oriented character and im interested in catfolk samurai. has anyone had any experience with that combination before? and if so got any tips?

Is this based on the old 1991 cartoon Samurai Pizza Cats?

lol no but now that you mention it i can see that now xD

No but it seems like the class is not playing to the race's strengths. It wants you to use weapons off a list (not claws), wear heavy armor and doesn't reward charisma until at least 8th, often 15th level (depending on the order).

That said you could maybe do TWF with wakizashi and take order of the eastern star to use light armor effectively, or order of the star or order of the lion to get benefits from charisma.

So playing catfolk wouldnt be wise for samurai. what race would be better suited for that class? and the wakizashi does sounds interesting. what are your thoughts on the Naginata?

Catfolk aren't impossible. The TWF/eastern star thing, maybe with a sohei monk dip to get mounted skirmisher would be effective so long as you have a challenge available.

Alternatives - as always humans are good, with a bonus to whatever stat and the extra feat. If you go for a naginata you're definitely going to be a strength-based character, tho' with enough dex to use combat reflexes - human, half-human, hobgoblin, or a small race for a medium size mount (halflings can get risky striker & their racial FCB to make up the damage difference) all have their points.

so i just read up on twf and what it means for wakizashi. thats amazing!

Catfolk ninja, try to grab a bite attack, possibly claw pounce.

Call them rakasta and have them come from the invisible moon and ride sabertooths, and you have [urk=http://www.pandius.com/Myoshima.pdf]Myoshima[/url].

I wouldn't say it is unwise... you just don't get much out of it, really.

This isn't a dwarf trying to be a sorcerer, where the race actively hurts the class. It is more like a dwarf being a rogue- nothing notable really. No bonuses, no penalties.

You have dex2/cha2/wis-2, which is fairly common. You can work around that. +cha might help a bit for chain challenge (which lets you challenge another enemy within 30' for free when you kill the first one; done well, it lets you effectively change your challenge from a single target ability to a 1/fight ability as you go from enemy to enemy).

One thing you have is a racial feat that lets you use the lunge feat without the -2 penalty. That can be nice- maybe make a naginata build? Besides that, you aren't really getting much. But you aren't hurting yourself either- so if you want to make your animes, feel free.

Sovereign Court

Should be noted also:

Aasimars agathion variant, can look like all kind of animals...include cat people. While it doesn't give a bonus to strength, the bonus to con is always handy and would help you for being a frontliner with naginata.

Bonus for being an agathion blooded you could go for some very exotic look for your cat person.

As an aasimar, you also get the favored class bonus for cavalier, which adds to damage.

Are interested more in the flavor or the class? Anyone can be a samurai(flavor) to some extent. It just takes a little more work.

I think a Catfolk samurai with the Ronin Order would work rather well. As Catfolk tend to be ones who travel and seek inner enlightenment. They also tend to be good and honorable, which is what samurai strive to be.

The cat's luck at re rolling reflex saves helps the poor reflex saves samurai start with. Low light vision is always a plus and if you use charge, run or withdraw you add 10 feet to your movement. Which would help you cover the battlefield better with charge and run.

I think it would be a good combination to play.

Kuniyoshi kabuki strike!

I can help you with the mechanics much, but hot diggity there’s some good period artwork for your concept. Search ‘kuniyoshi cat samurai’, and you’ll see what I mean.

oh wow ohako your right. thats alot of old timey paintings :O

Might I suggest playing a Brawler? By using the weapon mod rules and Versatile Design you can do some interesting things. By taking the feat Weapon Adept (Versatile Design) and spending 500 GP, you can make a katana part of the Close weapon group. This allows your weapon to be used with your Brawlers Flurry. Note that by RAI, your not proficient with the Katana as a brawler, but by RAW, you ARE proficient with a versatile design katana. It's pure cheese, but technically rules legal. From there you simply get yourself a 16 Str and Power Attack, then flurry your enemies into oblivion.
