How long does Tetori Grab last?

Rules Questions

So the Tetori monk can spend 2 ki to use their Grab on creatures larger than they are.

For the 1st round using Grab, that makes sense. You attack, you hit, you spend 2 ki to grab that giant.

However, Grab has an ongoing effect.

"If the creature does not constrict, each successful grapple check it makes during successive rounds automatically deals the damage indicated for the attack that established the hold. Otherwise, it deals constriction damage as well (the amount is given in the creature’s descriptive text)."

So because the Tetori has Grab, each grapple check it makes in successive rounds deals unarmed strike damage. This is in addition to Constrict, and in addition to the 'damage' grapple action.

My question is, how long does the Grab last? Is it 2 ki to establish the Grab, and then they have it till they lose it? Or is it 2 ki per round to keep having the Grab ability?

I took a look at the Ki Pool Ability. It looks to me that when you use the Ki abilities listed there, they have a duration of 1 Attack or 1 Round. So, being generous, lets say 1 round. The Tetori Grab costs 2 Ki Points, and those other Ki abilities cost only 1, so 2 rounds? I'm still thinking 1 round, but it wouldn't hurt to ask your GM.

Keep in mind that that text is immediately preceded by "A successful hold does not deal any extra damage unless the creature also has the constrict special attack." So this will only apply for Tetori monks above level 14.

But I hope there's clarification for you on the duration.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The grapple initiated by grab lasts until the the initiator releases/fails to maintain the grapple or the victim escapes. Whether this question has any real meaning depends on the answer to the at least 7-year-old question "Does the grab text indicate that a creature with grab maintaining a grapple deals damage in addition to the usual 'maintain a grapple' damage, or does the text simply restrict the 'maintain a grapple' damage to the attack form that initiated the grab?"

That question has never been answered definitively, so good luck.

Tetori's have other ways of getting Constrict before level 15.

Yes, you would think after 7 years that would be adequate time to answer that.
