Gonna be attending my first SFS session tomorrow! A few questions...

Starfinder Society

First off, do I have to shell out $50 for my own copy of the Core Rulebook? If I remember correctly from PFS, you ARE allowed to share materials at a table, so long as you attend it regularly. I would assume this means I wouldn't need to, but am I wrong?

Second off, can I play a Half-Elf? Though not a core race, it's still technically in the book, right? Or would I have to switch over to another race? (Human, most likely, to keep the the character as intact as possible.)

And finally, any other general tips or advice? Thanks in advance for your help!

Half-Elves are not currently SFS legal without a boon allowing access. Only the core races at the start of the core rulebook.

Buy the $10 PDF first, and if you like the game, then buy the hardcover.

Space combat can take a while, but it is fun, once you have the concepts down. You are all working as a team.

Please note that the Starfinder Society is, as a rule, Good-aligned.

Congratulations on playing your first Starfinder game!

Do you have to buy the Starfinder CRB?

For your first game, no. Most GMs will allow a new person to play a pregen to try the game out. Then if you like the game and wanted to play again, you could purchase the book. I should also mention that the Starfinder CRB is a worthy purchase, especially in PDF if you have a way to read PDFs (then it's 9.99.) The artwork is gorgeous, and the rules are pretty easy to understand.

If you want to make your own character, you probably should pick up at least the PDF.

Can you play a Half-Elf?

Not without a Legacy Race Boon, unfortunately. I am hosting a contest on this forum where I am offering up one of those boons for someone with a good story about their character. You are welcome to join the contest if you like.

At the moment, the only SFS legal races are those in Chapter three.

Hmm

I'd love to hear all about your Half-Elf!

Welcome to Organized Play!

It is a requirement to own the Core Rulebook, either in physical or digital form (the pdf is much cheaper!). That being said, if you were in my area and you wanted to try out a session or two before buying the book, I would certainly allow that, and I think most folks will allow for a grace period.

The seven races outlined in Chapter 3 are the only always-available races, so you'd have to go with human. However, the legacy races are available with a boon, and you could pitch your half-elf idea to Hilary right here!

Make sure to review the Guild Guide, which explains a lot of the SFS stuff. You can rebuild your character before you play them at second level, so you can tweak anything that isn't working for you.

And have fun!

Ninja'ed, but posting anyway for the Guild Guide link.

It's only fair, Kate. You ninja me half the time, and I'm the one with the cool red mask.

You will use your Pathfinder Society number for SFS as well. The characters start at 701. Like PFS, you can rebuild the character for free until it is played at 2nd level.

Make sure to ask for the Welcome to Starfinder Society boon that only be applied to the 701 character. If no one has it, you can get form the boards as well.

SFS does not have a slow track like PFS.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone! I dunno if I can download it onto my phone, but I'll see what I can do. I've also just submitted my entry for the contest, so here's hoping!
