Weapon Specialization

Rules Questions

What type of damage is weapon specialization? I could not find it mentioned. Specifically, does the level/half-level to damage from WS interact with the energy resistance/DR rules at all? As an example, would a sonic rifle at 5th level do 1d10 shock + 5 untyped, or 1d10 + 5 shock, or something else?

It increases the base weapon damage and remains that same type for resistance purposes.

Does a character like an envoy, who does not start the game with longarm proficiency, but who decides takes longarm proficieny as a feat at level 1, automatically get weapon specialization: longarms at level 3?

Rules at written say: You gain Weapon Specialization as a bonus feat for each weapon type this class grants you proficiency with."

Which makes me think the answer is No. Meaning you would have to burn 2 feats to get proper use out of a weapon you don't start proficient in.

You're right, you need a proficiency feat and Versatile Specialization feat. The good news is it's just one more feat to get full use from heavy weapons at that point.

IIRC, the book says "you gain weapon specialization in the weapon proficiency the class give you".

So yes it is two feats.

This is one reason I am going to take 1 level of soldier with my operative. Or I should say plan as life will probably get in the way and I will not be able to get more then 1 game in.

Wait, on an Operative? Why? All their class abilities only work with Operative Weapons and Small Arms and they're already proficient with those.

One level of Soldier plus Versatile Specialization? You'd need three levels without the feat.

That one soldier level would get you proficiency yea...
but your not getting 3 levels of soldier for weapon spec...
your 3 levels of Operative won't grant you spec for your soldier class effects.

Would still need versitle weapon spec feat.
would save you long arm and heavy prof I guess..
though I don't think most operative skills work with that?

I agree, 1 level of soldier for long arm, heavy weapons, grenades, heavy armor, +2 fort and +2 will. I think that is it or at least the thrust of my thoughts.
Then 1 feat for Ver Wep Spec and get all of them. Either from Opp feats or simply save 3rd level feat for 4th level when you get your 3rd level of Operative.
I agree Opp tricks do not work for it but often in the games I play in you are not in your comfort zone all of the time and you have to be very adaptable.
ie you gun gets sundered or knocked out of your hand etc so you grab you next best option. Or if there is not other option you take what is next on the ground.
Hence also why I plan on taking improved unarmed strike for my first feat. My not be that high on many peoples list but I think I can get good use out of it.

In general most of the home games I have played in are not video game style games, I think the last time I played in video game mode for a long term game was back in 84.
Note: Nothing bad with video game rp'ing but it is just not what I tend to enjoy any more.

Again, hoping I get more than 1 game in but as often is the case other rpg commitments get in the way. And I think I like the class the most out of anything in the book.
