Personal Upgrades (enhancement Bonus)

Rules Questions

Just to clarify: are personal upgrades (Page 212) treated as true permanent enhancement?

Is the following intended:

An personal upgrade, enhancing an ability above 16, results in this ability only receiving +1 when one applies "Ability Increase" from leveling (page 26)?

Since you can swap out personal upgrades I would say no.

So you can swap out personal upgrades?
“and each permanently grants you additional ability score points.”

When you apply your ability score increase at 5th and every other 5 levels you DO NOT add the personal upgrades to determine how much to add.

Now where does it state you can swap out personal upgrades? The above to me states they are permanent and can’t be swapped out.

I don't have a page quote, but I distinctly recall that personal upgrades are *not* considered permanent increases. Thus, they do not result in the reduced benefit from ability increases.

As for being swappable. . . my interpretation is, you *can* change them out, if you decided you wanted to boost a different ability score. You have to pay for the new one fully, though, and you can't sell the old one for cash, so its a bad idea. This is supported, albeit indirectly, by the fact that you *definitely* can upgrade a personal enhancement from one level to the next, and it only costs you the difference.

The clear RAI is to prevent you from buying infinite ability points, not to lock you in to one single benefit forever.

The quote I provided came directly from the personal upgrade section. It explicitly states they each PERMANENTLY grant you additional ability score points. By that alone they are permanent. Unless you can show where they can be upgraded, by what I quoted they cannot. Permanent means they are there forever. RAI means nothing when RAW is there. Again show where it states what you are saying.

Also it does not state anything about adding the increases at 5th level other then the personal upgrades to not apply.

You're not licked to one single benefit - That having been said, once you put one in, there is no way to take it out.

You can upgrade it to the next tier, it says that much, but removing it? Not possible.

Some of these are magical energies, some of these are alterations to your brain, some of these are symbiotic organisms.

Once they're in, they're in to stay. So you had better know what 3 attributes you plan to buff in your lifetime.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yeah, reading the Personal Augments section, once they're in they're in, but CAN be upgraded.
as for not counting for your 5th lvl stat bumps, that's in the leveling up section, pg 26.
"If a chosen score
is 17 or higher (excluding ability increases from personal
upgrades—see page 212)"
