Aegis astral suit questions

Advice and Rules Questions

I have a player who wants to use (simultaneously) Ranged Attack and Augmented Weapon (i.e. wants to use the latter to empower the former). The rules don't seem to be entirely clear on whether this is legal, but my gut says it's not. Thoughts?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Ranged Attack isn't a weapon. It's just an attack, so they wouldn't stack.

That said, I wouldn't be too afraid of allowing it. At the most min-maxed, it'd only be a few more damage per ranged attack.

Ranged attack is a weapon -- it's a projectile attack (similar to a crossbow bolt from a crossbow) -- the "launcher" in this case is the astral suit.

Augmented weapon makes the projectile one size larger, so it is perfectly legit combination.

Quote:

Ranged Attack

The aegis gains the ability to propel a non-psionic crystal, formed from the astral suit, at a target as a ranged attack that deals 1d8 points of piercing damage and has a range increment of 30 ft.

It is not ever referred to as a weapon. It's closer to a spell, like acid splash.

"propel a non-psionic crystal" -- this is the same function that a crossbow does to a quarrel.

A weapon doesn't propel the crystal, though. The aegis' own power is what projects the crystal. If the crystal is a weapon, then what's its critical stats? Does it do less damage if the aegis is small? Does it do more damage if the aegis is large?

It's critical stats are missing, true. No, according to the developer, changes in the size of the aegis doesn't affect it. Which is likely due to the rules for things like ranged weapons and enlarge person. Enlarging the weapon directly should work, however.

It's a projectile. I'd put the crit stats as the same as a sling bullet.
