Is there any rule that states a halfling hunter can not ride her boar companion once he reaches medium size at level 4? I looked through the animal companions and saw a few medium sized ones that say a cavalier can use them as a mount. Like the Gila Monster and Shade Ferret. And the Roc entry states that a druid or ranger can use it as a mount, so there's no reason why a hunter can't be mounted.

well if we go by that feat undersized mount which say
''Prerequisite(s): Ride 1 rank.
Benefit: You can ride creatures of your size category, although encumbrance or other factors might limit how you can use this ability.
Normal: Typically a mount suited for you is at least one size category larger than you.''
so typically any mount suited for you is one size category larger, so if you are small anything medium would be suitable, i would say only quadruped are suitable when one size category larger but i have found nothing on the topic so i say refer to that feat to help you
