Liberty's Edge

Hi!

Thanks in advance for the help.

I am playing a 1st level wood wizard, elf who really wants a faerie dragon familiar. I would also like to do a very fey like/druidish character with her and was wondering what might be the best way to do that. I was looking at the Magwabian (sp) PRC that helps give druid spells but that would take away from the familiar bonuses wouldn't it? Would the eldritch bloodline feats help with the feel she is looking for?

Thanks again for the help,

Sovereign Court

Well, the first thing to realize is that faerie dragons aren't normally allowed as familiars by the Additional Resources. However, there exists a scenario which has a boon that allows a character with familiar to get a faerie dragon. I won't spoil the name of the adventure, but it's at least nominally about fey in the blurb. If you search the forum for a while I'm sure you can find out which one.

Second, the Magaambyan Arcanist is indeed a great choice for a woodsy-themed wizard. However, there are a few downsides.

a) You won't progress in your Wood school powers. You'll still be able to learn spells of course. IMO you get the most out of the school with 5-6 levels so that works for the prestige class.

b) You won't progress your familiar to the all-important 7th level. But you can fix that with the Boon Companion feat. Still, it's going to take you a lot of feats to both meet the entry requirements of the prestige class and get the familiar.

Thank you, I was run through the scenario in CORE and found out that was the only way, so far to get this type of familiar and I would DM is so that this character would get access to it or ask a friend to run it for me in standard.

The feats are Spell Mastery: Taken at 5th as a bonus feat
Scholar: Taken at 5th
Improved Familar:
Boon Companion

Her feats so far at 1st level:
Scholar: Doesn't make sense to me but it is a Pre-Req
Spell Focus Evocation (I thought about either Charm or Illusion and since this is her first level I can still swap things out)

3rd level I would take another spell focus I think or maybe arcane strike

5th level: Bonus Feat would go to Spell Mastery
Regular Feat: Boon Companion?

7th: Improved Familiar

How does that look?

Sovereign Court

It'd work.

You might also want to look into Intensify Spell as a feat, because it combines well with the Burst of Radiance spell and the Magaambyan Arcanist's Lasting Goodness ability to create a fairly powerful blast of light that blinds for much longer.

Liberty's Edge

That is a great idea!

I was looking at the number of good spells available but I can only see that the Summon Monsters are good spells for wizards and maybe celestial aspect, Is there something similar for fey?

Liberty's Edge

Are there any other spells with the good descriptor? I think the angelic aspect spells count.

Pseudo Dragons are fine, she just needs the Feat to upgrade her Familiar.

If she takes Familiar Bond Feat, her non Wizard levels will advance her Familiar.

PRC of Arcane Savant could give you druid spells on your List.
