I too enjoyed that part, Ace.

Scarab Sages

Ghostlore - I could really get to like this series. They laid out some of the basics in this newest issue. You have a near death experience, you can then see and interact with dead people. And they want to tell their story, unburden themselves, so they can move on. Otherwise they’re stuck in limbo/purgatory. Only I think some folk can do more than just hear and see. I think the preacher and his daughter can affect them physically. And the mystery villain, Constantine’s discount evil twin, can control them. The ghost in this story, I think whatever evil thing wanted her for itself is going to come back into things further down the line.

Warlock: Rebirth - well, Adam thought he was done. Until he wasn’t. Then Eve thought she was badass, until she wasn’t. Then the High Evolutionary stepped in with a back shot. I figured he’d be the main villain.

Superman: Lost - looks like Supes spent a lot of time on that distant planet, with a VERY lonely evil Green Lantern (who likes taking showers with the door open). Something more went on there. I’ll be intrigued to see what went down. And the little bits with him back home, trying to cope with what he’d been through (like possible years in space with no sound). It’s an interesting new “enemy” for the Man of Steel.

Moon Knight - the new(?) Black Spectre makes his first big move. I still think he’s Plesko. Maybe he could also be that mind control doctor. I wish he would have killed Zodiac, though. That dude’s getting on my nerves. It was good to see Frenchie again, even if just in a flash back. The fighting was brutal. And 8-Ball to the rescue. Maybe he’ll become a new sidekick. I wouldn’t mind. The usual art was pretty good. The flash back and prologue art was solid as well. I look forward to next issue, since the cover looks like it’ll be a Hunter’s Moon focus.

Immortal X-men continues to shine for me, especially now that council realizes they screwed up. Also loved the focus on Doug on this one. The ending was a very WTF?!! moment...but not terrible.

REALLY do enjoy seeing Wanda do her thing along with seeing her 'son' handle some of the Kree back story. I thoroughly enjoy this series and heartily recommend it to everyone.

Web of Carnage is weird...but at the same time it shows that the Symbiote itself has decided it has no *&$%s to give about its destiny. Overall can't wait to see how this plays out. Also cool, Torunn Grønbekk will be doing a series.

(Not NEARLY as cool as Iman Vellani doing Ms Marvel but still!!)

Overall I'm looking forward to the end of Avengers Beyond and more of McKay's Avengers.

Scarab Sages

Ronin: Book II - finally got the third issue. Weird. Looks like Virgo rebuilt the Ronin with the idea of using his to remake the world. Doesn’t look like it’s gonna work out. Miller’s art is great. The story this time around…..not so much. Still fun to read, whenever they come out.

Big Game - I’ve never been one for the Millarverse (as I’ve heard it called), but I picked this up on a whim. Found out about it when Mark Millar appeared on a YouTube show I watch occasionally. Anyway, without knowing too much about a lot of the background stuff (Wanted, Kingsman, Kick-Ass, The Ambassador’s, etc), I was getting a sort of Crime Syndicate meets Old Man Logan mashup. Big evil brotherhood of villains teamed up back in the day to take down all the superheroes, now they secretly run the world. Now new heroes are threatening their evil status quo. The art is by Pepe Larraz, whose work was awesome on House of X and X-Men (about the only good thing for that series after a while). Anyway, I look forward to the rest of this miniseries. Might even pick up some of the stuff that preceded it.

Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea - ooookay. This is really weird. I’ll kind of be thankful when it’s done.

The Last Ronin: Lost Day Special - this one shot was pretty much about trying to set the stage for the new turtles and future New York City. As much as I’ve enjoyed the Last Ronin stuff, the new turtles were the least impressive bit about it. I doubt they’ll have much luck if they try to push it more. It was interesting to see the Purple Dragons again, at least.

World’s Finest - it was nice ending to an adequate story. How do you beat a new Amazo who can instantly duplicate the power of anyone who gets close to it? Sick the old Amazo on it and let them destroy each other. With a healthy dose of Metamorpho thrown in to finish off the bad guy with a good, old fashioned elemental ass whuppin.

Scarab Sages

Speaking of that show I saw with Mark Millar…..

During the video, he mentioned he had run numbers and seriously given consideration to putting together investors to try and license DC Comics from Warner Discovery. That was interesting.

I certainly think he’s got the business mojo to pull it off. And he’s definitely got the creative mojo to be a kind of editor in chief. Hell, he’d sure as s&$t probably do a better job than the folks they’ve got running things now.

Scarab Sages

I also picked up the collected edition of Night of the Ghoul, the recent miniseries by Scott Snyder. Not too bad. Solid story. Decent art.

Haven’t finished it yet.

Kind of Surprised you didn't mention or get to Moon Knight: City of the Dead. It's pretty great. Pepose does a great job capturing some of McKay's energy.

Also, Al Ewing continues to shine in X-men Red.

Hellfire Gala folks! This coming week! Things will change.

Scarab Sages

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I saw an article about a new villain in one of the Bat books. It seems to be a female version of Hush named…..Shush.

Maybe she’s an angry librarian.

We had one of those at my high school. We called her Conan the Librarian.

No idea if that's some other world or not.

What I do know...Oh BOY is there fallout coming from Hellfire Gala 2023...and some SERIOUS retribution due.

Scarab Sages

The Incredible Hulk - meh. So far this series is starting off kind of lame. This newest Mother of Monsters sounds an awful lot like that Lilith chick from Ghost Rider and the Midnight Sons. The Eldest seems like just another Lilim. So nothing new. And Hulk is angry at Banner. There’s a surprise. I might give it a few more issues, but it’s not looking promising.

Danny Ketch Ghost Rider - I never really liked Caretaker all that much. He seemed kind of a butt head. Still does. But it’s nice to see the old Danny, and him teaming up with Blaze. And while Scarecrow was always a weird villain, he was kind of interesting in a twisted way. Blackout got old kind of fast, but he always was Danny’s best enemy.

Batman Beyond: Neo-Gothic - Interesting start to a new series. I hope they try to keep it going. Looks like Terry and the new chick are an item. Too bad, I kind of liked Dana. At least they mentioned her. Lumos is annoying at best, extremely lame at worst. He’s the one thing about this new Beyond continuity I truly dislike. Still, I like this Gotham Deep. It’s got potential. And it looks like we’re getting maybe Killer Croc? Or at least some version of him.

Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor - I saw this new Black Label series and thought it looked really cool. Damn, I was correct. Waid presents a compelling story of Luthor and Superman. With Luthor dying, he not only talks to Supes about saving him, he even manages to turn it to his advantage and hurt Superman. Then we get some great stuff with the Fortress of Solitude, Kandor, and a Zod-rules Phantom Zone. All in all, I can’t wait to see where they go with this.

Scarab Sages

Almost forgot to mention….

BRZRKR: Poetry of Madness - it was a fun little one-shot (at least I think it’s a one-shot) with Unute being the protector of ancient Atlantis. Then some evil priests trick the King into helping them get some relics Unute’s hidden away so they can summon Cthulhu. Unute fights and kills it, with Big C ranting about Unute being some kind of servant of Light. It was a little silly and over the top, but fun. I’d love to see them do more stories like this.

The art sucked balls, though.

Honestly I feel like Hulk is doing the best it can given the fact it went from Al Ewing's epic run to something else wherein Cates had an emotional break down and they had to change writers. So while it might not be THAT epic as Al's, I do think that Philip Kennedy Johnson is doing his best to return this comic to a serious horror comic. Which I think it deserves.

Also; HELLFIRE GALA!!!!

Scarab Sages

A rare week where I had a lot of books, but some of them were one-shots, and others were ends of miniseries.

Thessaly Special - A cool one-shot tied into the other stuff they've been doing with The Corinthian and the Dead Boy Detectives. Thessaly has never been my favorite character, but she's tolerable when she's well written. Still, there are only so many ways you can tell the same story, which is kind of all you ever see with her - she sees a threat to herself, or something she wants, and she kills or manipulates anyone in her way to get it. After awhile, that gets kind of tedious. Again, however, in the hands of a good writer, the story can at least be entertaining.

Hellboy and the BPRD 1957: From Below - This was a cool little one shot with HB, the Professor, and another agent investigating a weird site. They find an old cult lab and a recently awoken cyborg zombie. Hilarity ensues.

Warlock: Rebirth - I was hoping for more from this finale. Instead we get a rather cliche, bad buy sees the error of her ways, turns against the true bad guy, helps hero defeat him. By....what....sheer determination?!? That's how it seemed. Disappointing. And it makes me less likely to buy more of these Marz and Lim miniseries.

Fire and Ice - a prequel to the animated fantasy flick from the 80s. Lie a piece of my childhood returned. Some interesting set up - The Fire and Ice nations already at war, but Ice not yet the juggernaut it will be. Nekron not yet the leader he will be, but scheming and murdering his way into it. And then there's Darkwolf...He looks and acts exactly the same. The art is great. So is Willingham's writing. Sienkiewicz cover is awesome. I look forward to more.

JSA - a lame ending to a mediocre story that took far too long to put out. Still, I was amazed they did it in less than six issues. Considering they're remaking the DC universe (again), and retconning more (and lame looking) characters into existence, I might not continue with the series. Especially if they're going to keep up this trend of not putting books out on a regular schedule.

Order and Outrage - Weird, but fun. They did a lot of set up in this four issue miniseries. Maybe could have used a bit more. The time jumps didn't help. The art was solid, however, and the story was just enough to leave me wanting more. Its the other classic trope of order vs chaos. At the end of this, 'm left thinking they're associating order with evil and chaos with good, but we'll see. Maybe it'll be more like B5, and both with be buttheads. I hope they do more.

Last Ronin: The Lost Years - All that build up, I was hoping the fight against Death Worm would be a little more. Still, we all knew where it was going. And, to be honest, the journey was far more interesting than the destination. The last few pages make me think Eastman (or someone) has something planned for these new turtles. I always like to see new characters take the place of the old, and I wish them luck, but I doubt I'll be part of it. I liked seeing badass Mikey, but the new ones just weren't all that interesting. The thing about their names was kind of lame.

Moon Knight - an awesome one shot featuring my other favorite Fist of Knonshu, Dr. Badr aka Hunter's Moon. So now, after his recent resurrection, his brain is broken like Marc's, but in a different, very interesting way. That's got some potential. And another old villain pulled out of the wood works - Vibro. Love the issue, and hope they do more with Hunter's Moon. He's the best new hero to come along in a good while. Certainly better than most of the other trash they've come up with.

Conan The Barbarian - Titan comics did not disappoint. We've got a still young Conan, venturing near his homeland 8 years after he left. Then, out of nowhere, cursed zombie-looking Picts attack. Simple, but elegant. The art rocks. Can't wait for more.

Doctor Strange - so now we get an abridged version of what happened in the War of the Seven Spheres. Interesting to see his transformation from Doctor to General. And now, given the last pages, I have to wonder if the Death of Doctor Strange unleashing the General wasn't someone's master plan all along....

Also of note: the latest issue of X-men showcases that normal humans have NO shot against Kitty Pryde, master ninja and Wolverine protégé. That and having Kamala show up and show off, nice stuff.

Death of the Venonverse is going about as expected. I hope though it does better than End of the Spiderverse.

General Strange is basically the War Doctor without some of the moral quandary.

Iceman's new series basically explains how he's still around after Hellfire Gala...I mean Mutant Massacre volume whatever.

Scarlet Witch continues its trend of bringing back forgotten villains and doing something different with them. Along with an apparent return of Joseph, Magneto's clone.

I’m a little bummed. Rippaverse started order fulfillment for Isom #2 a week ago, but I haven’t gotten my shipping notice yet (that I know of). And I know I ordered on the first day of the campaign.

Granted, it was late in the day on the first day. So it could be they’ve got plenty of folk in front of me.

Either way, I’m looking forward to reading the book.

Scarab Sages

And I can’t wait to order the Rippaverse book Chuck Dixon is writing. Should be pretty kick ass.

I'm more interested in seeing what Image and Boom are going to be doing. Plus Millarverse.

Millarverse is a thing for certain. The redone Nemesis was certainly a thing. The first one was actually kind of good because it showed that for all of Nemesis' superskill, he could be brought down by someone going just as crazy as he was. The rework flat out goes 'You have no chance, make your time.'

Well that might be true IF there weren't other super heroes that are going to be showing up in Big Game.

Scarab Sages

Woot! Finally got my shipping notice for Isom #2. All three copies are expected to be delivered tomorrow.

Yeah, I ordered the initial three different covers (they added a fourth later on). Partly because I wanted to splurge on myself a little. Partly because I'm eager to see the Rippaverse succeed (more so than it already has).

Scarab Sages

I also ordered several copies of one book to donate to a charity for kids. And a short box with Rippaverse art.

I have commentary about McKay's Avengers that is positive...but saving it for tomorrow.

Also for positive; Children of the Vault aren't playing around.

Scarab Sages

Woot! Got my copies of Isom #2.

Shipping was much more efficient this time. Just two days from my notification email until I got my package.

I’m might wait until the weekend to read it, though. It’s a (very) slow comic week (probably the slowest in years), and I’ll need something else to read.

In other news:

Jed McKay's Avengers continue to shine and show us he's definitely the new rising star.

Children of the Vault shows us that rebranding can work...if you have a virus thought type meme to use.

Immortal X-men is proving that Gillian is a great writer, Shaw sucks, and there's probably more going on than we know.

The start of Contest of Chaos is intriguing...but hardly rising to same level as Jed McKay or some others.

Amazing Spider-man...needs some new editorial.

The two part Wolverine-Ghost Rider cross over is meh.

I do wish Silk would get more than a few mini-series. She's pretty cool even if her villain roster is limited.

Scarab Sages

Huzzah! One day away from my weekly trip to the comic book store!

Even though I don’t buy a lot of the crap modern comics, I still enjoy shooting the s$&t with the staff. And looking for (far superior) older comics.

*shakes his head* You are so lost.... it's not even funny any more.

Scarab Sages

Ghostlore was the only new book this week. Looks like the girl is taking off because her father, the preacher, prefers to violently put spirits to rest. She just listens to them, then hurts herself. Weird, but whatever. And the ghost story this time again hinted at something more than ghosts out there. It’s interesting, but if the pace doesn’t pick up soon I’ll drop it for being too boring.

I did also pick up a collected edition of Mark Millar’s The Ambassadors. I’ve been wanting to get more of his independent stuff ever since I saw him on a YouTube episode a couple of weeks back. This one was interesting. I like the super-Korean chick, but I think my favorites are the old Australian dude and the telekinetic guy who was the government experiment. The chick’s husband was a real d*~&!ead (reminds me of some people), so I kind of liked what happened to him in the end. Some of the art was cool, some of it was meh. I’ve never really been a Quietly fan, but you can always pick out his work. Anyway, this collection also had a handy recommended reading order in the back. That’ll be useful.

Scarab Sages

Finally got around to reading ISOM #2. It was pretty kick ass.

From the first issue, we had retired superhero-turned rancher Avery Silman asked by his sister to look into the disappearance of a young lady. That lead him to his old acquaintance, now a seemingly powerful crime boss. There was a fight with another Except (a bodyguard for the crime boss), then a visit to the Rippaverse version of Edna Mode.

This episode saw a brief flashback to why Isom had retired, some more shenanigans from both the crime boss and the boss of Isom’s sister (who’s got some mystery stuff going on), and some new character intros. We met Goodyng, who’s kind of like a private contractor Tony Stark. There was also Sydnee Bloodruth, magic user (a kind of blood magic). And there was Chadran, the….thing….whose actions led Isom to retire. There was also a lot more supernatural stuff, which makes me wonder if they’re going to go the old Elementals route and have most super powers mystical in origin.

They did a little more world-building as well, taking about what sounded like it might have been the break up of the USA. Apparently, Texas won (big surprise there). And they had more with Alphacore (seems like an official government super team) and Yaira (who secretly works for the same company as Isom’s sister. Both of those are getting their own books, with Alphacore by the great Chuck Dixon.

All in all, I’m enjoying both the books and the success of the Rippaverse. With his second multimillion dollar campaign (and a few weeks left to go), I’m hoping it’s here for the long haul.

If you liked the Ambassadors, you REALLY should be picking up Millar's crossover with Nemesis and the rest, Big Game. It's pretty epic.

So I got time;

I still don't get the point of this limited cross over with DC. Sure it's nice to see your heroes (and some villains) nightmares. But honestly it's very blah.

Marvel, OTH...

The new Alpha flight twist wasn't too twisty but it was sufficient.

The end of Chip's run on Daredevil was VERY well executed. I feel bad for Ahmad Saladin for having to the follow-up.

Dark X-men feels decent but at the same time I just am not sure I'm THAT invested in X-men that might be morally questionable when you already have that kind of.

SPEAKING of morally questionable! Gerry Duggan's new run of Uncanny Avengers is good but it does make one feel a little queasy about Cap's willingness to let the X-men kill Orchis. (Yes I agree. They deserve it..but some on. They are fascists, but these aren't soldiers.)

Death of the Venonverse rolls on. I do hope though 616 Andi has a better time/better chance against OP Carnage Symbiote. So far he's just steam rolled bunches of other Venom-ized Symbiote wielders.

The cross over with Wolverine and Ghost rider is going better than expected. Probably because Percy is REALLY leaning into the body horror along side the wet work Wolverine is known for. (Plus the backup story about Wolverine and Johnny meeting is decent.)

Loki's mini is good but honestly I feel that adding in Bullseye is a bad choice. If only because I feel weird about letting that maniac anywhere NEAR mystical stuff.

The next round of Contest of Chaos is pretty good, with both Storm and Tony making 'solid' hits on both the fight and the character attack front. Still unclear what Agatha's goal is beyond a new Darkhold.

The end of Slott's Spider-man run was a good and indeed solid ending with more backstory on Spider Boy/Bailey Briggs and Pete's relationship and indeed Bailey's back story (although not explicitly so.) So now on to Superior Spider-man redux and Spider boy!

X-men Red continues its streak of excellence with Al Ewing's deft hand doing some good lifting along with the start of the Genesis War. It's pretty awesome to see the fights and especially now that we see Isca stay on the sidelines. We'll see it if that lasts. Or if other things change on the ground. I would STILL love to see Nova in his own series.

Saw an article about an appearance Mark Millar did on a YouTube channel. Millar threw out the idea for industry veterans to come back to Marvel and DC and commit to two years runs on one or two titles, just to try and help improve sales.

I would not be opposed to this.

It will most likely never happen.

Are there no "industry veterans" on Marvel or DC titles now? What qualifies as "industry veteran" anyway?

Good question. I’m hoping to track down and watch the YouTube show he appeared on, just to see if he names names. It was called Thinking Critical (I think), which I’m fairly certain I’ve seen in my YouTube feed, and possibly even watched once or twice.

Scarab Sages

Update: found the video, but it’s like 2 hours long. So I’ll have to wait until after work to watch/listen to it. Although I’m hoping it’ll be similar to the last time I saw Millar on a YouTube channel, and he doesn’t stay the whole time.

Scarab Sages

Damn! Watched the video. And while it wasn’t completely disappointing (because I’ve found listening to Millar highly enjoyable), it was a little disappointing.

He didn’t really go into much detail about who he’d like to see back, other than to say “big names” and such. Himself included, of course. He did say not just writers though. He’d love to see some big name artists come back as well.

Again, could be cool. I know I have my list of who I’d like to see.

Scarab Sages

Back to Millar, though. I love listening to him talk about his work and the industry in general. I think he’s got some great thoughts on the matter.

And he said he’s doing a Superman story for DC in the near(ish) future. Apparently he came up with it while on holiday, and has been planning it for awhile. No date, though. Which is understandable. That’s dude’s busy.

Honestly while I appreciate Millar's honesty, I don't think this solves the problem of drawing in MORE of an audience. You only do that by having others TELL people this is a comic they should be reading.

I say that especially after what I consider a VERY successful relaunch of Thor by Al Ewing. He gets Thor. He gets the Mythos. He gets EVERYTHING about it.

The same is true about Hickman who's newest stuff I REALLY enjoy.

I don't need people to come back to enjoy comics. I enjoy comics when the stories are there. Immortal Thor is proof of that.

Yeah, basically I'm trying to think of "big names" who aren't currently doing Marvel or DC comics and who aren't just retired. Or at least retired enough not to want to commit to a regular long term series rather than just a mini-series or something.

Claremont did an X-treme X-Men series a little while back, but he's in his 70s. He's not going to sign on for the long haul again.

Jason Aaron's Thor was great. I wasn't impressed with the Donny Cates version. Haven't gotten the shipment with the first Ewing Thor yet, but what I've heard for reaction to it sounds good.

Other than Millar himself, the only writer dudes I can think of in the same age range are Garth Ennis and Warren Ellis. You’ve already got Mark Waid (about a decade older) doing some solid books at DC. And Geoff Johns is back there as well. If you wanted to push it to more folks in their 60s that might grow the list - Gaiman, Alan Moore (barely), maybe a few others. It’s just don’t see a lot of them coming back.

Maybe it’d be easier to get some artists back, but even there I’d think it was iffy.

Still, a great idea. Just maybe not practical. Two years might be an awful long time for some of those dudes.

TheJeff,

If you enjoyed Simonson's run...it's like that but with Al's unique takes.

Also I'm not as fond of Ennis as I used to be. Same for Ellis.

Anyways,

BP continues to fight for justice in Gotham....I mean Birnin T'Chaka. (I say that with a slight mock but the Catwoman knock off makes it fun and hard...) I'm enjoying mostly the Afro-Futurism of this title while still being a more grounded take on T'Challa's role as Wakanda's protector.

The Finale of Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing's Captain America run was good and serviceable. About the truly high point was Bucky's decision to have the Power be held by Doom. (If you know anything about Doom and his history with Fortunov, you know Wulf would have rather taken a bullet.)

Best twist of the week has to go to Pepose in Moon Knight City of the Dead.

Spoiler:
So apparently not just the people Marc killed want him dead but we see the return of Randall as Jackal Knight. Nice!!

The end of the Daredevil/Echo crossover was...eh. I still can't figure out where it lands in the whole "Zdarsky" run, but whatever.

Deadpool ends with some light hearted romp and Lady Deathstrike as both an Aunt and a new Dog owner.

Contest of Chaos continues with Blaze and Johnny KIND Of facing off...but really it's more about Johnny not wanting to fight Blaze and using trickery to get him to stop. Still unclear why we need all this trickery for a new Darkhold...but whatever Agatha.

Best part of Invincible Iron Man is seeing both Emma and Tony compare scars. That plus Tony saying "Avenge them!" Oh and nice little ending with our new White King, Wilson Fisk. :)

Jean Grey's title should be more "What if...Jean insert" Certainly feels like we're going to hit all the greatest hits in some ways.

Best and most surprising book had to be Marvel Unleashed. NOT the same Pet Avengers we've had before, but seeing Redwing be kind of arrogant while Chewie plays it cool is great. Best new character though has to be D-dog. (She has no powers but weirdly she is weirding D-man's old mask.)
Oh and we go from Kraven the Hunter to Blackheart for villainy. So there's that.

Realm of X is basically the X-men in Vanaheim trying to help with a prophecy...and stop war. Who are the Vanir fighting?

Spoiler:
Weirdly enough it's Saturyne. You'd think she' try for easier prey considering how this is a THOR realm of sorts.

Al Ewing does right by both Eddie and Doctor Doom in a smash but at the same time fairly good character moments brawl. Honestly I think I'm more into Al when he's writing Eddie than when we have to switch back to Dylan now.

And X-force...well it's pretty clear Mikhail didn't plan for ORCHIS to crash Krakoa. But I guess now he has to figure out what comes next. Oh and X-force realizes that Colossus is a sleeper agent.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Ellis has shown himself to be reprhensible with his past actions so he can stay out.

Unfortunately, artist skills decay with age. Certainly, the speed to get a book out disappears with age.

You can't save coming cs with things that appeal to comic book poeple. To save comic books, we would need to move eyes off of tictoc and video games. (This is of course impossible, comic books are going to die.)

I’ve got stuff from last week (when I wasn’t feeling well) and this week (when I’m still not feeling well, but I’m more functional)…..

Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea - so the whole thing seems to boil down to origin of the man vs monster archetype story. Fun.

Queen of Swords - I’m still a bit confused by the time jumps, but I’m liking the characters. I kind of like the magic tats thing. I’m guessing Serra is an elf. And lots of elves in this world seem like wankers. And Soren is the Uber-powerful magic user who’s the key to everything. Very cliche. Or maybe archetypal. Either way, it’s fun to read. And the magic, talking, bloodthirsty weapons are a hoot.

Dark Knights of Steel - nice ending. When you’ve got dudes who’re weakened by fire, a volcano seems like the best weapon. I was sorry to see J’onn die, and kind of sorry to also see Waller turn evil. She used to be not so much. Not sure if I’d pick up a sequel.

Batman Beyond - Killer Croc got big. Poor Waylon. And the cat dude is magic? All that time under Bruce’s tutelage, and Terry never encountered magic? Sad. I was never collecting bat books when they started that Court of Owls stuff, but I kind of liked the idea (except the part about them being around since the city was founded, that was kind of dumb). I wish they’d make use of older bat villains, but at least they’re using one of the better modern ones. The art is kicking ass.

World’s Finest - another origin story for the friendship. How many is this now? Still, Waid tells a good story. And it’s always nice to see Jax-Ur being used. I just wonder how he’s able to exchange places with someone? And apparently control the Riddler (my guess on that is using other Phantom Zone prisoners). Loved the way they broke down how Bruce figured out Clark’s secret identity. The art has a retro feel to it, which fits the story.

Immortal Thor - not too shabby. Makes good use of mythology. Solid art. Not really keen on this newish version of Loki. I much prefer him as an outright villain. He’s always made a great villain. I partly blame Tom Hiddelston for this. His portrayal of Loki was so charming, I think it made fans want to see him as more a hero (or maybe antihero) in the comics. I’ll just hope he takes a turn back to the true villainy he does so well. I would have liked the tribute to John Romita better if they’d gotten quotes from actual comic legends.

Big Game - ouch. Them villains ain’t messing around. I almost feel sorry for The Ambassadors. But I know Korea was already on at least her second body, so I’m sure she has back ups somewhere. Eggsy! Hit Girl! Cool. I’ve really got to read more of Millar’s old stuff.

I wasn't impressed with Big Game or Nemesis Remastered. The original Nemesis was deadly but for all his showboating, was ultimatly a rich SOB who was backed up by a bigger group and got his jollies by killing normals for the lulz. Him getting dispised of by the Presidant and the Protag was hilarious and awesome by how he got out crazied.

This book has been the reason I still go to the comic shop every month (and get all sorts of other stuff while I'm there anyway). It's so darn good! Never in a million years would I have been imagining getting a book where the fun characters are newish creations like Sunspot and 'Kobak Never-Held'. (Who made me laugh out loud this issue, counting on his fingers and saying, 'That's not a haiku?')

And man, he writes a great Sunspot, and a regal Storm! This issue even had the one Isca appearance, like, ever, in which I didn't loathe her and her dumb plot device power. :)

I'm enjoying Big Game for the fact Millar is connecting various series together. I know this version of Nemesis isn't to everyone's taste...but I'm enjoying it.

And yes Set, X-men Red has consistent sat well with me. So too is Immortal Thor.

WHICH to address A-Zombie's complaint about Loki...look having him be full on villain isn't NEARLY as fun as having him be a more...slightly antagonistic but still ultimately decent character/foil for Thor. Which is as it should be. So for me, I enjoy seeing him be more Skald/God of Stories and Trickery than "Evil".

I mourn for the loss of Cat Loki
