As a druid can I take the form of an octopus (movement speed of 20ft) and stay on land indefinitely or do I need to go back under water? I was under the improve ssion that since I am still human I do not take on the aquatic subspecies when wild shaped and therefore would be able to breathe on land without any issues. Could I get some clarity on this one?

The only thing the polymorph rules say about breathing is "If the form grants a swim or burrow speed, you maintain the ability to breathe if you are swimming or burrowing." And as you say they do not give you the aquatic subtype. Therefore you never lose the ability to breathe whatever you could breathe before... unless the GM houserules otherwise, which a lot of them will, so check with them first if you're in a home game.

Ask your GM
the GM is the final arbiter of what abilities depend on form and are lost when a new form is assumedIf the form grants a swim or burrow speed, you maintain the ability to breathe if you are swimming or burrowing.
There is no rule saying you lose the ability to breath how your natural form breaths.
