A cone-shaped spell shoots away from you in a quarter-circle in the direction you designate. It starts from any corner of your square and widens out as it goes. Most cones are either bursts or emanations (see above), and thus won't go around corners.
So just choose a corner that's "behind" you.

No, it hast to start from a corner away from you. But a channeler always has the options to be affected or not by their channel.
I don't think there's such a thing as a corner away from you. All corners are capable of being your center for the purposes of magic effects. Like how a sphere spell emanates from any of your corners.
