Is it legal to have an evil companion in PFS?
Be it a familiar or other companion.

I know players can't be evil, but being within 1 step of evil is playable and so help access to evil companions.

Various evil aligned familiars are legal options. Check out additional resources for specifics.

The base rule for improved familiars is that you have to be within step of its alignment, so that allows evil familiars in principle.

However, several improved familiars have more specific rules in the familiar's description, such as "a chaotic evil spellcaster of level 7 can be my BFF", and in those cases a chaotic neutral PC is out of luck.

Nothing forbids it, if you meet the requirements for the familiar, etc. and it's legal for play in Additional Resources. You as a player and character are responsible for what your class feature does.
