dungeons and lairs in the area...

Rise of the Runelords

Are there any dungeons or lairs in the Sandpoint Hinterlands that might have loot in it that the adventurers could explore during their off time? I know I can make something up, and I'm happy to, but I was wondering if there's anything already written.
Thanks!

The Beginner Box has a dungeon that the PCs can explore, and might actually solve one of the major PC complaints of Book 1 - there's not enough loot!

The first book of Jade Regent, The Brinewall Legacy, is set in the area. You could import some of the encounters from there.

I had one of my players encounter the swamp witch Old Megu in Brinestump Marsh. She's actually dead in Jade Regent and her house is ruined, so I made a map of a non-ruined version of Megu's hut for that encounter, which you are free to borrow. My PC needed a teacher for certain rare magical rituals, and Old Megu fit the bill. The PC traded away her youth in exchange, so in my campaign "Old" Megu is no longer old.

A quick explanation of how this side quest is happening in game:
One of my characters has had an extensive past with women. I plan on having one of the women confront him in the woods. She has a young girl that turns out to be the PC's child. She also has a rogue boyfriend who wants to coerce the famous adventurer PC to help him steal some riches from a local dungeon/lair/whatever.

Silver Crusade

You could have them try to steal from "Pillbug" Podiker, the local 'chemist', he's got tons of illegal goods in his shop, or steal from one of the manors to the south, like the Scarnetti's, or mayor Devrin.

Depending on when you have it take place, stealing from the closed down Kaijitu glassworks could be interesting too, or securing the smuggling tunnel for him.

Silver Crusade

Also, could have them steal from Vhiski, the leader of the local Scarnzi gang.

It has to take place outside of Sandpoint. I already have other subplots going with Pillbug (and my PC herbalist/hearler) and Vhiski and other NPCs.

IMHO, the scale of the Sandpoints Hinterlands map is far too small. There are dozens of "places of mystery" within 2 or 3 miles of the place.

I suggest taking a slightly broader view:
A homebrew map of central Varisia

Or an even wider view:
A homebrew map of even more of central Varisia, with scale

And only then can you start to really get into the sandbox feel of the place.

With some help from PH Dungeon and a few other lads on the RotRL boards, I did up this map for the long trip to Hook Mountain, but it's the kind of thing we used to do back in the 70s and 80s for the full-frontal-sandbox feel.

I would highly recommended getting the first couple of volumes of the Pathfinder comic hardcovers. The supplementary material includes several excellent encounters set in and around Sandpoint, and I've used many of them while running the adventure path just to help flesh parts out here and there.

If you buy the individual issues of the Pathfinder comic, they come with folded battle maps inside for each setting. It's like buying a mini-map and getting a comic for free! Issues one through six of Pathfinder focus on Sandpoint.
