Shayliss as an Adventurer NPC

Rise of the Runelords

I am running Rise of the Runelords as a moderated one on one campaign. It's been running smoothly since the begging, me (Gm) and my player are really enjoying this adventure path. We have been through almost the middle of the first chapter. Almost in the part where the PC(s) investigate the Glassworks. The point is, my player has been really interested in the NPC Shayliss Vinder, even though he knows Ven did not approve their lust desires. My PC wants to compete his adventuring party with other NPCs (including Ameiko and Shalelu) but he wants for some reason for Shayliss (a commoner) to join his group. In game the PC has a sister (older) which is a rouge and my plan was for her to teach Shayliss to be a rouge. Do you think this is a good idea? What are your comments suggestions?

What is the PC character's class what are the classes of the other NPCs you're recruiting?

I'd think that between Ameiko and Shalelu you'd have a lot of the "rogue" abilities covered already. Also, I'm not sure where you're getting Katrine Vinder being a Rogue from, she's listed as a 1st level commoner, or is that something you're thinking of adding?

Assuming that you're already adding the NPC bard and ranger, I'd probably make Shayliss either a Sorcerer or an Oracle and play up the angle that she's only just discovering her magical powers and wants to travel with the party to try to figure them out.

The PC is a Human Fighter, the NPCs are Wizard Elf, Cleric Dwarf, Bard Human (Ameiko) and Ranger Elf (Shalelu)

Sounds interesting for her to be an oracle or sorcerer, thanks for this advice.

BTW: Its not Katerine who is a Rouge, Its the ingame PCs older sister.

Also, if the player has more attachment to Shayliss than the elven wizard or dwarven cleric, then it probably makes sense to phase one of them out, depending on whether you decide to have her become an oracle or a sorcerer. The player has shown an interest in an NPC, so it's only natural to give them more screen time than the ones they aren't responding to.

Nice! I will take that in account. The problem is, he seems pretty attached to both the wizard and the cleric (in the means he is looking forward to see them in action and role playing) :P But I'll talk about it with him!

What class does the player think Shayliss should be?

Rogue (Unchained?) does sound like a good idea - that would fill out the party well - fighter, wizard, cleric, rogue and let you leave Ameiko and Shalelu for their already assigned AP roles. If you were so inclined.

AP Story Note:

Spoiler:

Having Shayliss in the party will drive some subtle changes to Book 2. It won't make much sense for Ven to accuse the party of killing her older sister. And in general makes the party less viable of a suspect to others, like the Sheriff. You will need to account for how this relationship changes Aldern's obsession as well. Perhaps he is insanely jealous of Shayliss... And viewed killing her sister as a bonus - maybe knowing about her relationship with Harker made him a good target from Xanesha's list.

My player has not yet decided to what he really targets Shayliss to be, but I'm thinking making her a Rouge or Sorcerer/Oracle wouldn't bother my player in any way.

In reply to Latrecis' post:

Spoiler:
The elven wizard or dwarf cleric could still fill the role of primary suspect, particularly if either could be viewed as jealous of the PC's blossoming relationship with Shayliss.

Same as with Aldern, as Latrecis already stated.

Here's another branch question to this one. How do you think Ven would react to her daughter wanting to become an adventurer in the group with the PC?

Dot.

The AP is vague on Ven's underlying motivation - is he specifically concerned about Shayliss' promiscuity (real or potential) or is he concerned more generally about her safety? In the latter case, crawling through some abandoned ruins infested with goblins in the company of some strange adventurers seems just as undesirable as canoodling with one. Perhaps Shayliss is more mischievous or adventuresome so she runs afoul of his boundaries more frequently (suggesting a Rogue might be a good choice.) Or she acts out in rivalry with her sister - whom he is initially more concerned about (AE p.380)

I'd keep it simple: he doesn't want his daughters involved in anything or with anyone that is "no good." And associating with unreliable adventurers (let along becoming one!) should be just as bad as conniving lumber mill operators.

Looks like the PC is creating a harem. ;)

In our campaign Shayliss ends up being a victim of Aldern and is taken back to the Misgivings where the PC's eventually rescue her. She is so traumatized by these events that she stops being such a flipskirt and finds solace in the church, ultimately becoming a priestess of Desna under Father Zantus' tutelage. Don't be in a rush to have the NPC's all join up...let them evolve a bit and then join for their own reasons - it'll make the game world feel more real, more 'lived-in'.

The best example of the kind of PC Shayliss might be is the character of Tika from Dragonlance - she was even a redhead.

Also in our campaign Nualia actually becomes a part-time member of the party after a series of events which lead to her eventual death, redemption and resurrection (kind of).

Wow, nice! I will take in account the part where Shayliss gets kidnapped, will give my player a bigger motivation to stop the Skinsaw. How did your party manage to turn Nulia to the light side again? In my game the PC already had bonds with Ameiko, Tsuto, Nulia, etc I explained that since he grew up in Sandpoint these where the friends he had, including Nulia. So I think he has a bonus on turning Nulia for redemption at the end of Burnt Offerings. Any suggestions?
