has anyone ever done some work with figuring out how high you can get a single weapon or natural attack's damage dice for the purposes of vital strike? I'm actually rather curious how dumb we can make vital strike. So far the biggest natural attack I've found obtainable by shapeshifting is the Behemoth Hippopotamus's 4d8 bite attack, or the Formain Queen's 4d8 claws, that you can up to 6d8 with improved natural attack.

I think the monster most bandied for this sort of thing is the Carnivorous Cavern Crystal who sports a 7d8 slam.
(Note, only shapeshiftable by Cave Druids)
Lv 10 equivalent cave druid, specifically. By casting Strong Jaw, and referring to This faq, we see that the base weapon damage for the slam goes to 16d6.
Combine that with at least one level of barbarian and the furious finish feat, and your basic vital strike becomes 192+str damage

I think a Carnivorous Crystal has come up in similar threads. Its slam is 7d8. Cave Druids (archetype) can change into one.
With the spell strong jaw (increases natural attack as if 2 sizes larger), I believe that works out to 16d6. See the table here — 7d8 -> 8d6 (per "coversion" since 7d8 not found), then -> 12d6 for 1 size increase, and -> 16d6 for 2nd size increase.
