Non-Sorcerer Dragon Disciple

Advice

Got a friend who's wanting to play an Ifrit Fighter/Dragon Disciple. He's using the efreeti magic racial ability to qualify for the spellcasting pre-req, and was wondering if the Eldritch Heritage feats would help increase his sorcerer levels for the dragon bloodline abilities. I haven't seen a problem with that working, but I wouldn't be surprised if I missed something.

El no worko.

Ah, okay. Other than that, would the Eldritch Heritage feats work as he intends?

Yep.

Thanks for the advice!

No prob, I love you.

Might I suggest bloodrager to dragon disciple? There is an faq that states DD raises bloodrager bloodline.

I'm going to throw my two cents in and show you a neat little feat that will let you make a non-sorcerer DD if your friend is willing to count as a human. This feat allows you to play as a spontaneous divine caster and be a Dragon Disciple. The advantage to this is that you can play as something like the Feral Hunter hunter archetype and get all of the fun goodies of the PrC while still having a breastplate, melee weapons for when all else fails, and a spell list that really helps you when using polymorph spells (let alone the fact that you get a slightly more limited version of Wild Shape). Now the only problem is race wise. Well, as long as you are alright playing a race that can count as a human for the purposes of feats you have Racial Heritage. Of course you can also use it to play as an oracle or an inquisitor, but the hunter's spell list is simply more complimentary with this sort of build. Barkskin should stack with all your other armor bonuses (including the natural armor bonuses gained through Dragon Disciple) and you can buff your natural attacks with Magic Fang and Greater Magic Fang.

Also the EH levels wouldn't stack with the increase you get from the PrC. As in you wouldn't be able to somehow have a sorcerer level of 24 at 16, assuming EH and 10 levels of DD. The Eldritch Heritage version would be it's own separate entity and wouldn't benefit from the Dragon Disciple PrC in any way. Instead you would have two pools of abilities in which some of the stuff (like the third level ability) would not stack.

What is also good for him to know is that you can grab an Amulet of the Blooded and a Robe of Arcane Heritage to boost your sorcerer levels by a further 6. So if you were a non-sorcerer with 10 levels in Dragon Disciple your bloodline would be that of a 16th level sorcerer.

Now if he just wants to be a smashy dude with a major dragon theme to him there are two other big options that I know of: the draconic bloodline bloodrager (possibly with Rageshaper in order to increase the damage dice of your friend's natural attacks) or the relatively new Dragonheir Scion fighter archetype which trades away the Armor Training and a few bonus feats for natural armor, some resistances, eventual flight like the bloodline power, and free Arcane Strike that works for them even though they have no caster level. There is also the Dragonblood Chymist into Mastery Chymist, but they technically can't do that without taking the Infusion discovery (unless the GM believes that the ability gained at 3rd level counts as Feral Mutagen for the prereqs of Master Chymist). Plus there is the fact that the Advanced Mutagen that makes you more like a dragon just isn't that great and that the Dragonblood Chymist's mutagen isn't the greatest unless all you care about is strength and natural armor bonuses.

The Amulet of the Blooded does not stack with the Robe of Arcane Heritage because it has these statements in its description: "If a creature that already has the associated bloodline wears the amulet, the wearer does not gain the abilities listed below; instead, the effective level of his bloodline powers increases by 2. This effect does not stack with other abilities that increase the effective level of bloodline powers."

However, a more straightforward possibility might be to start out as a Bloodrager VMC Sorcerer. With 5 levels of Bloodrager, the character easily qualifies as a Dragon Disciple, and he has Bloodrager and Sorcerer bloodline levels equal to his character level at all levels. The Amulet of the Blooded for the Draconic bloodline can certainly boost the Bloodrager bloodline level by +2. It is unclear whether any item or effect can boost the bloodline level of a VMC Sorcerer -- but even this worst case works out pretty well if you can spare the feat slots for it.

Ah, missed that little line. Welp, just means my own character will just spring for a Amulet of Mighty Fists instead (unless he uses Greater Magic Fang and permanently enchants them).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

the feats don't work with the bloodline DD gives you. And if you go DD and get the draconic bloodline stuff it prevents you from picking dragon with the feats.
