Scarab Sages

Quote:
Bonus Feat: A crusader gains a bonus feat at 1st level, then again at 5th level and every five levels thereafter (to a maximum of six at 20th level). These bonus feats must be chosen from the following list: Heavy Armor Proficiency, Improved Shield Bash, Martial Weapon Proficiency, Saving Shield, Shield Focus, Tower Shield Proficiency, and Weapon Focus*. At 10th level, a crusader may also choose from the following feats: Exotic Weapon Proficiency, Greater Shield Focus, Greater Weapon Focus*, Improved Critical*, Shield Slam, Shield Specialization, and Weapon Specialization*. At 20th level, a crusader may also choose from the following feats: Greater Shield Specialization and Greater Weapon Specialization*. Bonus feats marked with an asterisk (*) must be applied to the favored weapon of the crusader’s deity. A crusader need not meet the normal class- or level-based prerequisites for these bonus feats.

At first level, I want to take Weapon Focus (deity's favored weapon, in my case, Weapon Focus: morningstar). Can I?

Weapon Focus requires:

Quote:

Prerequisites: Proficiency with selected weapon, base attack bonus +1.

Benefit: You gain a +1 bonus on all attack rolls you make using the selected weapon.

Special: You can gain this feat multiple times. Its effects do not stack. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of weapon.

Definitely seems like the intention of the class is that I can take weapon focus at level 1, but there isn't an exception to the BAB requirement for this feat and clerics have a starting BAB of +0.

Maybe this is already FAQed somewhere? Thanks.

Class or level based prerequisites are things like Weapon Specialization requiring Fighter 4. That's what you get to skip.

BAB is something of a stricter limit, and the text you quoted doesn't seem to help.

Agree with Saethori. BAB is not a class or level based prereq.

BAB is based on level. It think there's an argument here that it could work that way. I am not sure how I feel about the strength of that argument; but it seems to me like it certain fits what seems like the clear purpose of the bonus feat prerequisite exceptions.

I believe that the author commented that bab was still required. Not super "official" but supports what everyone else is saying how it works.

Scarab Sages

The archetype is specific in what prerequisites the bonus feats bypass, and BAB isn't listed. You can't take weapon focus at first level unless you are multiclassing and already meet the BAB requirement. It's why I took crusader at 3rd level instead of first on my crusader's flurry monk.

But in that case, the asterisk next to Weapon Focus means absolutely nothing. The only prerequisite for Weapon Focus is BAB +1.

(Did I just necro this thread, or is "not dead yet"?)

Was there an errata on Crusader at some point because I swear I remember that they got Weapon Focus with their deity's favored weapon automatically at lvl 1.
