Splitting Demogorgon, how to do it and survive?

Advice

(I've used alot of R.A. Salvatores books to help set the world for myself and my players, I'm currently only on book 1 of the Companions codex so I would apreciate no spoilers from there on please and thank you!)
So just to start right off, I know how ridiculous this may sound. I'm not looking for a ton of responses telling me how I CAN'T do it I'm looking for interesting ideas on how to do it, or more accurately suggestions on how to improve on the plans I already have. Without further ado here is some back story followed by how I intend on going about the task.
I have created a being of incredibly concentrated chaos, a god in his own world. This world of his is essentially a parallel universe very similar to Toril but amped up. Imagine something akin to living under a much stronger gravitational pull in addition to the world being incredibly savage and brutal. One of the biggest differences between the two world's is the lack of an overgod in the amped Toril leading to less balance in the pantheons. I have named this chaotic being Mordacai and he was actually a lesser god of Chaos in his own world. When he became aware of a promising underling of his raising up to challenge his right as god he realized he was quite bored with his life anyway. So he abandoned his diefic throne and tried something unheard of, leaving. Not just leaving his plane but his reality, he was aware of the nothing sometimes found between existences and had always been intrigued but knew also that nothing had ever returned from entering such a void. Not caring what the result would be he ripped his way through reality into the blackness of nothing, nothing good at least.
Cut to Ao, overgod of Toril, minding his own business going about his daily(?) routine. Which I can only assume consists of watching over the whole of his universe with a timeless outlook, insureing the balance remains in his control. I've also taken the liberty of assuming he has at his disposal the materials and skill to create souls, entire races if he so chose. His timeless pondering is interrupted by the sounds of whimpering that he can not pinpoint the location of no matter how hard he searches his massive domain. After extensively searching he finally finds the voice leaking through the smallest cracks of existance and makes the biggest, maybe only, mistake of his existance. He reaches inside and pulls out a wretched being lost in the throes of terrible insanity having floated in the nothingness between world for an unknowable amount of time. He nurses the creature back to some semblance of sanity, having not felt threatened by the broken thing and only thinking of the chaos inside as a side effects of its tourtured time in the blackness. For a long time, many thousands of years, Ao teaches this thing named Mordacai much of what he knows, showing him the wonders of his vast domain, it's many gods, mortals and creatures. Slowly Mordacai finds himself again, constantly keeping Ao unaware of his increasing mental ability and his nefarious plans. I've not exactly decided how he did it but he has somehow caused Ao to lose his control of Toril and captured it for himself. Ao is not dead but is most definitely incapacitated for some extended period of time. Mordacai wants to turn the world on its head straight into chaos and his first plan is to shake up the gods comfortable pantheons. He has many plans for this but we are just here for one, splitting Demogorgon into two separate entities, something it has wanted for a looong time.
Now for those of you who made it this far I have created an artifact specifically to be used to split him, a sword that actually contains within it the devil Lord Levistus, but just seems like an incredibly powerful intelligent item. Our party has actually been hand picked by mordacai and brought together by "coincidence" to be his instruments of change in Toril. The party consists of (just so you know)An elven Wizard of the Air school who's life mission is to rebuild the Hosttower and never let it be controlled by evil forces ever again, A half orc Skald/Witch(rockstar) who sold his soul for a killer voice(uses word casting), A full blood orc descendant of Obould many-arrows Warpriest (stole Oboulds sword because Gruumsh comanded him in a dream), A human slayer know for ridding his part of the world of many a foul creature, A Mermaid samurai/barbarian(i know right)protector of the sea, A Drow Ninja/Brawler ex member of Bregan Dearth(my character)true neutral merc., and finally a rogue aristocrat who is an infamous thief at night(and his wizard smurf cohort)kinda batman-ish.All level 16 with 2 mythic tiers thus far will probably have an additional of each by the time demogorgon needs splitting.Alignment wise we are mostly a mixture of good, neutral and chaotic.
Mordacai has brought them together and drug them through a healthy pile of crap thus far, but soon we will be heading to the Abyss for reasons not even concerning Demogorgon and will then be "Persuaded" by Mordacai to help him do this little thing since we're already here, we will be under the impression the sword will utterly destroy both halves if I forgot to mention that earlier.
Now skip to the actual encounter which hopefully the party can successfully get some amount of surprise on Demogorgon, i only want a few rounds of combat, as soon as someone can land a hit with that sword it ends. So one of my questions, how would you do such a powerful event as the sundering of Demogorgon? The blade is not meant to kill or even hurt, just seperate the two beings into seperate selfs with thier own physical body. The blade will also break finally freeing levistus, who made a deal with Mordacai to be released from his icy prison, only to be trapped in a sword to await this specific condition of freedom. I've played with the idea of him saving the party, as I've also thought the sundering of Demogorgon would create earthquakes and discharges of such powerful energy the party could never survive, but I want them to, short of lame godly oh I swooped in and shielded you or teleported you out. Any ideas? Sorry for the longest question ever. Feel free to ask whatever you have questions about!

No offense my friend, but this really needs a tl;dr (Too long, didn't read) at the bottom with a summary of what you want. It also needs to be edited to not be such a wall of text.

Thank you for your advice...

Silver Crusade

Vorpal blade to cut off one of Demogorgon's heads, then clone spell on the severed head to grow it back to full power?

Lol

Silver Crusade

Hey, Demogorgon's been trying this for millennia, by RAW and common lore, there IS no way to do it. Therefore, as GM, make up whatever you want. I'ld probably make it something that would really hurt, to make it obvious why he DIDN'T ever do so before.

Thanks for what I already know lol

Nothing to do with beheading or the set-up you have here, but the Apparatus would seem like an interesting plot device to separate Demogorgon.

I've not heard of that, is it and artifact or something?

Yeah, it's a big honkin' machine originally from the 1e module, I:10, the House on Gryphon Hill. As such, it's associated with Ravenloft, though it can from time to time be found outside of there. Basically it's a big honkin' machine that is similar in appearance to the mind transfer machines you see mad scientists use all the time. It can switch souls between bodies, but it can also split a soul into two halves using one of the Rods of Rastinon (and rejoin them). The only transformation so far has been into good and evil halves, but others are supposedly possible. Who knows what effect it might have on a creature devoid of good like Demogorgon?

Details on the Apparatus can be found in the non-Ravenloft 2e Book of Artifacts (p. 13-15) and several Ravenloft sources. I'd have to poke around for 3e sources

Thank you very much! This is very intriguing, i don't mess with 1e/2e much but that dosent sound to hard to convert.
