Party comp. for Kingmaker AP

Advice

Dark Archive

Hello, guys!

I'll start to play the Kingmaker AP and after (many) deliberations, the party counts now with a Bloodrager (Str focused), a Magus (Int focused) and an Alchemist (Int focused).

I'm the fourth player and they imposed me to create a Cha focused character, to become the Ruler.

I thought in create a Mesmerist, but I don't know where to start. The guides that I read was not much inconclusives about the builds, after all.

Can somebody help me, given some ideas of how can I build it? I think in a Cult Master more caster focused.

I shall be grateful for your ideas of builds, stats, feats, traits (will be 2, one must be campaign trait) and so on.

Thank you for the attention! :)

Well, you could do the sorcerer achetype Razmirian Priest to cover arcane and divine casting.

Shaman using the Lore as a wandering spirit for Arcane Enlightment also helps with the spellcasting.

I don't know the Mesmerist enough to help with that though.

I don't know $#!+ about the occult classes, but it looks like your party could use a full 9 level caster.

Oracle or Sorcerer?

Or is the mesmerist a 9th level caster too?

Or let the bloodrager do the Charisma thing (they need at least a 14 eventually, right?) and maybe go wisdom-based? Cleric, druid, shaman?

You've got probably 3 people doing damage primarily there, maybe 1 with a sideline in battlefield control. A debuffer (mesmerist) is fine. Just make sure you keep developing Use Magic Device because someone's got to use the scrolls of Restoration etc. that you are going to need eventually.

A cult leader wants to drag a few disposable minions about eventually. Also it does feel a bit evil. If you don't want that go with another archetype or none at all. Base mesmerist is fine.

Assuming cult leader is your poison, you've got a whole lot of bits and pieces to keep in mind - hypnotic/bold stare or fanatical stare (not both at the same time), spells, tricks, and false healing/touch treatment. Maybe also your own ability to hit or shoot people with pointy things though that's unlikely to come to much beside your fellow party members.

For a buffer/debuffer you want to go before your stompy friends, so get Improved Initiative first.

1. Stares. This doesn't need feats spent on it for you, the fanatical stare buff is likely to be the most popular with your friends - but you can spend one on Intimidating Glance if you do want to use it to debuff. Disorientation and Sapped Magic are likely the best offensive bold stare options, if you prefer to use fanatical stare to buff in combat then Susceptibility and Allure are non-combat options.

2. Tricks. You get enough of these that pretty soon you'll have all the options you need, so don't worry about making a bad pick. There's no important options to improve it either, just remember to use the tricks.

3. Spells. Now here you do have options. Color Spray at first level is required though; too good to miss. In related news Spell Focus (illusion) is not a terrible idea. Heightened Awareness would be my other 1st level pick but YMMV. Later on avoid metamagic, you're not a full caster, even if you're blocked from casting by some mind-affecting effect & would like to have Logical Spell you have other stuff you can do without that.

4. False Healing / Touch Treatment. False Healing is a nice pre-combat buff, Touch Treatment when you get it at 9th is occasionally useful but not worth spending a feat on extra touch treatment.

5. Mundane combat. Not to be forgotten either. If you go strength-based a longspear (& combat reflexes) is useful, if dex-based then you need weapon finesse. Note that as a psychic caster you can cast with your hands full just fine, so weapon and shield (with a zero-ACP shield) is an option; so is going for dervish dance or ___ grace with an appropriate weapon, though not at the same time.

@miscdebris & @SmiloDan, thank you for the alternatives.

@avr Nice options! What do you think about the Vexing Daredevil archetype?

I think the vexing daredevil is trying to move into the damage-dealing space which you don't need a fourth person in. It might be good but in this party it isn't needed.

Edit: no, that's not entirely fair. The Greater Feint it gets @6 is a decent debuff - but without a rogue or similar to take full advantage you'd be better to spend your swift action on hypnotic/bold stare.

@avr and if I get the Rogue VMC?

VMC Rogue doesn't give you much sneak attack, and since you'd want to get the feint off as a swift action or as one attack in a full attack, you'd want to spend a bunch of feats there - which VMC makes difficult.

No, I meant it'd be valuable if there was another player with a rogue PC or other class with a lot of sneak attack dice which would gain a big benefit from your removing the enemies dex bonus to AC.

That many damage-dealers means that a bard's buffs would be very effective.
Plus, the charismatic leader thing.
