So I downloaded the app for Pathfinder and noticed that when you play a blessing, it adds the skill dice whether or not it was the highest die in the check. Is that accurate? Are you only ever supposed to add the skill die when using a blessing? If so, has that been true since Rise of the Runelords?

Blessing: Blessing cards often allow you to add dice to checks attempted by any player, including yourself, at any location. The die or dice added are of the type defined by the situation and the skill that the character is using for the check; the character must already have an appropriate skill to make the check.
Blessing: Blessing cards often allow you to explore or add dice to checks attempted by any player, including yourself, at any location. The dice added are normally of the type associated with the skill the character is using for the check; if a card instead specifies the exact dice to roll for the check, the added dice are of the type specified by that card. For example, if Enora is making a Charisma check with her Charisma of d8+1, Blessing of Ascension adds a d8.
There you have it. Since the beginning, it adds to the appropriate skill of the check. It wasn't very clear at the beginning as it is now but in the example on page 11 (of the original rulebook) under Assemble Your Dice, it states that you're adding another d10 because the character's Strength die is a d10.

From this, I understand your question differently than the other replies assume, so let's see if I got it right:
Are you referring to the case where you need to defeat a card with two alternative checks - for example, let's say the barrier Locked Passage (Dexterity/Disable 8 OR Strength/Melee 16).
So you encounter it with Merisiel (Disable d12+2 , Strength d8) nad you want to boost your chances so you play a Blessing of Thorag (or a BotG while Torag is the top blessing discard - then the game will also assume you're trying to duplicate Thorag).
So suddenly, on your screen you will have 3d8 instead of the 2d12+2 which are better and which you probably expected. This doesn't have anything to do with rules for Blessings, but rather with Obsidian's imlementation of their working. - What you need to do is tap on the drop-down menu below the check and MANUALLY select the skill to use for the check (Disable, in this example). Otherwise, the game will always assume you're trying to apply the blessing to any relevant skill (in this example, it assumes you're trying to use Thorag to get 2 Strength dice, even though this is not your best option). Hope this helps.

I've found its mostly going for the statistically best option (which may not be the maximally best option).
Like that 4d6 is better than 2d10+d4
4d6 avg = 14
2d10+d4 avg = 13

Well that changes things. Let's use Brielle as an example. I thought you could: Reveal item (Strength + 1D12). Blessing to add another d12. But it seems it is just the check skill.
Yep, unfortunately you've been doing it wrong. It's particularly painful for characters with d4 Strength or Dexterity skills... makes weapon-based checks much more difficult.

I've seen this. Seoni was making an Intelligence/Arcane 10 check against a barrier. Lini played a Blessing of the Gods with Irori on the blessings discard pile. The app gave me 3d6 instead of 2d12+2. I had to manually select Arcane as the skill.
