Learning to Bamf

Advice

Recently looking over images on google, i stumbled across a picture of Nightcrawler's dad, Azazel. Sharing abilities hes more of your evil side of Nightcrawler, and I decided I wanted to recreate this character for an upcoming game sitting around level 9. So far trying to make the image, which is him, Azazel, in a pirate outfit, duel wielding swords...

Tiefling Azura-Spawn

Unchained Rogue (Swashbuckler archetype) 6
Horizon Walker 3

Feats

1st
Exotic weapon - Dueling Sword
Weapon Finesse
2nd
Two-Weapon Fighting (Rogue Talent)
3rd
Endurance
4th
Weapon Focus Dueling Sword (Rogue Talent)
5th
Dimensional Assult (Retrained Feat)
6th
Double Slice (Rogue Talent)
7th
Dimensional Dervish (Retrained Feat)
9th
Dimensional Agility

Any feedback or help would be appreciated as I'm unsure which traits to take, possibly a draw back to get a 3rd trait. This, along with giving up my spell-like ability from Tiefling for another cherry picked talent from the list they have was approved. Thinking either another +2 to Wis for more Bamfing, or +2 Dex for everything else Dex gives.

BAMF and Rogue Has never gone together in Pathfinder.

The floor tends to be what the Rogue pairs with.

My recommendation is to go 7 Levels of Slayer and then Grab 3 levels of Horizon walker for D. Door SLA.

Im using Bamf not as an acronym, but the word printed anytime either of the characters mentioned teleported.

I think Furian is aware of how you're using BAMF. He's telling you rogue isn't a good choice to get horizon walker and eventual dimension door abilities, not that rogues are crappy combatants.

Is there another way outside of Unchained Rogue to get the ability to duel wield and get dex to damage that Im just not thinking of?

Every time i make a nightcrawler-esque build i go Slayer 6/ Horizon Walker 3/ Slayer X to pick up Ranger Combat Styles and Roque Talents to make up for the heavy feat involvement.

Every time? How many times do you remake the same character?

If your campaign is into Psionics at all, the Nomad (Psionicist) would blow everything else away. You get the ability to do short teleports at 2nd level! You could combine with levels of Rogue to get sneak attack, skills, and better weapons.

Aren't kineticists better at this now?

I mean... ride the blast lets you move up to like...480' or 960' in a single standard action, and you can do it infinitely. So just pick something with a nice looking blast (maybe air, since you aren't force to ride on a nice obvious flying boulder).

Any suggestions towards traits with the current build, or if the feedback directs more to a different class set, feats, and build advice? I'm attempting to keep it Dex based TWF, and D. Dooring a decent amount.

Kineticist can do some really cool things, but the Nomad fits the Nightcrawler template best. At 2nd level, unlimited teleports up to 15 feet, and it increases by 5 feet every 2 levels. At 8th level you get a 50% miss chance due to "inconstant position." Feels very Nightcrawler to me! Combine that with the Stealth and Sneak Attack of a rogue, and you could have a very fun character.

Ah yes, let me clarify, everytime i theorycraft a Nightcrawler. i have only used one once as an allied NPC at level 11. i generaly dont use that as true experience though as the character basically only existed at end game power.

A good option to pull what your looking for off.

Ranger (Freebooter)3 You get two weapon fighting, or double slice. And you get endurance as a bonus feat you don't have to use a slot on.
Unchained Rogue 3 Dex to damage for one finesses weapon.
Horizon Walker 3

Double Slice: has a FAQ it dose not let you do full dex to damage with both weapons. If your GM is ok with you doing it that's fine. Just letting you know. If they follow the rules double slice will not work for a unchained rogue.

Feats (Going with double slice working.)
1st Rogue 1: 1st Exotic weapon - Dueling Sword, Weapon Finesse
2nd Ranger 1
3rd Ranger 2: Combat Style: Two-Weapon Fighting, Double Slice
4th Ranger 3 Endurance
5th Rogue 2: Weapon Focus Dueling Sword (Rogue Talent), Dimensional Assult (Retrained Feat)
6th Rogue 3:
7th HW 1: Dimensional Dervish (Retrained Feat)
8th HW 2:
9th HW 3: Dimensional Agility

Info on the Double slice is awesome, I had no idea that was FAQ'd, thenks!

Any advice on Traits for this character, I normally play magic/spell based characters, so this is a little outside my wheelhouse. Reactionary seemed decent to get some bonus to Initiative.

If you're starting at level 7 or higher, pick any class with Variant Multiclass wizard, and take the teleportation school.

Not sure how this would work with your BAMFing -

Have you thought about picking up a couple levels of Magus?
Benefits -
*Fake TWF with spell combat. Does require making a concentration check but if you pick up the traits for this the DC is really low.
*Having to only enchant one weapon instead of two.
*You get to add your full +stat modifier damage to your attacks without having to spend feats on them.
*Have access to a bunch of arcane spells (magus spell list - scrolls).

Cons -
Your +BAB is one lower then where it should be.

I'd rather stay clear of Magus, its becoming a staple character for me to make. Just trying to get a feel of classes used in people attempts at this, Slayer, Ranger seem to be offered, no traits mentioned, and Why is Unchained Rogue such a bad class for this type of build?

Lower BaB, Poor Fortitude and will saves, light armor, D8 HD, and sneak attack as your main damage source.

Good job teleporting into enemy lines with those as your Base Combat abilities. You get there, Full attack, and if the enemy lives (most likely will) he will turn and put you in the dirt. Let's just pray the target isn't immune to SA damage.

The reasons the Ranger specifically and slayer are mentioned are:
Ability to Ignore dex as a pre-req, Full BaB, Good amount of Skills, (ranger) Endurance as a free feat, Superior damage sources (Favored enemy and Studied are more reliable than Sneak attack), Good Fortitude and reflex saves, Medium armor, and D10 HD.

Those reasons are very important to a person who will be teleporting away from the safety of the group to try and assassinate someone.

Lastly if you do go rogue I'd be one to recommend going with daggers, Knife Master and scout archetypes. But then again I never recommend going rogue.

But it specifies Dimension door, the Nomad ability says teleport.

If you have a nice DM sure, but otherwise not counting as a prereq.

The two major issues with Slayer/Horizon that often get overlooked in theorycrafting are that you don't get swift-action Study Target until level 7, and you can't use swift Study Target and Dimensional Dervish in the same round.

If you want to go with Unchained Rogue and Two-Weapon Fighting, I'd seriously consider multiclassing. URogue 3/ Weapon Master Fighter 3 will get you Weapon Training (plus Gloves of Dueling) and two bonus feats from Fighter, and you'll only lose one point of BAB from Rogue levels instead of two. By the time you can buy the Gloves of Dueling you're looking at an attack bonus that's four points higher than it would be with pure Rogue, and you've got 3 more base damage as well. At 10/11 you can then pick up a fourth level of each base class for the Rogue perks and Weapon Specialization.

With the basis of the character revolving around D. Dooring and bouncing around the field as he wishes, and rogue is frowned on, is there any builds someone can point me to, or provide that I could look at?

I need feat progression, maybe traits, weapons, etc. Leave magic items out for the most part as again most are reclaimed/found.

Hoping to apply Dex Duel wielding, Tiefling is 100% unchangeable.

Silver Crusade

Rogue can work. However it relies on a lot of knowledge on when, and what tactics to use. I'm running a game right now if the players hade better tactics things would go smother for them. Lacking a working understanding on what to do and when is hurting them more then any monster.

Other builds can and do work better for what you want. However they take longer to get going, and require a large amount of system mastery.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Unchained Rogue 4, Weapon Master 4, Horizon Walker 3

1UR. *Finesse Training: Rapier* / ~Retrained~
2UR. *Talent: Two-Weapon Fighting*
3UR. ~Retrained~
4WM. +Double Slice
5WM. Endurance / +~free Fighter Retrain~
6WM.
7HW. Improved Two-Weapon Fighting
8HW.
9HW. Dimensional Agility / ~Dimensional Assault~ / ~Dimensional Dervish~
10WM. +Weapon Specialization / ~free retrain: Fighter 1 bonus feat: Improved Critical~
11UR. Dimensional Savant / *Talent: Weapon Focus: Rapier*

BAB is 10, Weapon Training + Gloves of Dueling +Weapon Specialization + Weapon Focus grants +4 to attack and +5 to damage; Effortless Lace on rapiers removes the extra -2 penalty from TWF. From 12 onwards, you can use Fighter to rapidly stack up critical feats.

I'm trying to figure out what this thread is even about? Bamf? Who is Nightcrawler or Azazel?

This is Nightcrawler in action. He's from the X-Men, a superhero comic series. He looks like a blue devil creature, and fights by teleporting around rapidly. Azazel is his dad. "Bamf" is an onomatopoeia of the sound he makes when teleporting.

Bamf actually has a Wikipedia page. I guess I shouldn't be surprised given the current popularity of comic book character.

Ah, thanks, X-Men. I don't really know much besides basics about Marvel's stuff; I'm more of a DC guy.

This is riding a blast, it's not teleporting. Different feel, different look, different limits. Plus it's not in line with what nightcrawler does.
