How would you make an actual Totem Barbarian archetype?

Advice

So we all know about the totem barbarian archetype that has no benefit and gives you the ability to take multiple totem rage powers(which has since been errata'd).
My question is how would you make an actual totem barbarian archetype? What drawback would you give it?

Same drawback as every other Barbarian archetype.

No Uncanny Dodge or Trap Sense.

AM NOT "AM BARBARIAN," BUT AM DIFFERENT BARBARIAN, AND AM AGREE WITH SECOND TALKY-MAN. AM FIND TRAP AND DODGE AM SILLY FOR BARBARIAN. AM THINK TOTEM POWERS GOOD. ALMOST TOO GOOD THAT NOT-BARBARIANS THINK BARBARIAN ONLY GET ONE TOTEM EVER.

AM NOT HAPPY THAT BARBARIAN AM NOT BE BETTER BARBARIAN BECAUSE NOT-BARBARIANS SCAREDY-CATS. AM THINK NOT-BARBARIANS LOOK AT BARBARIAN "PURR-SPECK-TIHV" AND THINK DIFFERENTLY.

AM FOUND OTHER TALKY-MAN, AND GOT TALKY-MAN TO WRITE THINGS AND "CAHN-SEPTS" DOWN FOR FIRST TALKY-MAN OR AM SMASH TALKY-MAN. AM MADE "EH-DIH-TAY-SHUNS" FOR BARBARIANS UNDERSTAND.

TALKYMAN SEZ:
Totemic Savage
AM LIKE TOTEMS. ALMOST MORE THAN ALL OTHER BARBARIAN! AM ALSO SMASH THINGS. SO SAY AM BARBARIAN!

Totem Mastery: The Totemic Savage is boundless in the eyes of the Totem. As a result, he may possess more than one set of totem rage powers. At 2nd level, the Totemic Savage may possess up to 2 sets of Totem Rage Powers, and an additional set of Totem Rage Powers for every 5 levels thereafter. This replaces Fast Movement, Trap Sense, Uncanny Dodge, Indomitable Will, and Damage Reduction.

Totem Power: At 2nd level, and every 4 levels thereafter, the Barbarian must select a Rage Power with the word "totem" in its name. This alters the Rage Power class feature.

AM DIFFERENT BARBARIAN "UH-PROOV MEH-SEJ"!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

In this case, I think the minimalistic approach would be the most fun.

That proposed archetype seems like it loses a lot of stuff for being able to be a totem warrior. I think I would probably do the same but not take away fast movement and indomitable will.

To be honest, that's really Paizo's biggest fear: The Totem Powers by themselves are very damn powerful, so they limit each Barbarian to only possess one set of Totem Powers at all times. I mean, Beast Totem is extremely strong, and consider combining that with Dragon Totem, which provides DR and other goodies, or Fiend Totem, which gives a Natural Attack and a damaging aura; if a Barbarian had two of those (all they really need for feats are Power Attack, Raging Vitality, and Reckless Rage, rest can be Extra Rage Powers for the Superstition and such that they need), they would be absolutely monstrous.

And all they give up for that is Uncanny Dodge and Trap Sense and their miniscule DR? Paizo would have an absolute fit if they ran things that way. Keep in mind that they would still acquire Uncanny Dodge normally by 5th level, and just would not be able to acquire Improved Uncanny Dodge, so something else would have to give, meaning Fast Movement would be the next on the list.

I did consider Indomitable Will to have a sort of "capstone" for the Totem Powers, where allies receive the benefits of one set of the Barbarian's Totem Rage Powers while the Barbarian is in a rage, but that's too much power, and it can also make no sense or have major application problems, so I just did away with it as a pre-requisite loss in exchange for the factor you can select up to 5 sets of Totem Powers by 17th level.

**EDIT** Being threatened by AM DIFFERENT BARBARIAN like that made me scarred for life, man...

Greater Beast Totem. It gives pounce. I think that's how you build one of them totem barbarians. ...Or any other functional barbarian.

I just thought it might have been funny to combine Beast, spirit and fiend totems. To make a natural attack build that punishes people that are near you/attack you. I liked that idea.
