hey internet I love you, anyways I'm making a cavalier for the new hell's vengeance campaign and after starting hell's rebels recently and seeing the asmodean chick with the hell hound in book 1. I figured I want something similar.
So whats the soonest lvl you could get a hell hound companion or cohort or whatever its called, because the rules on it are kind of confusing.

You could ask for a magic item. There's that one item which is a bronze statue that turns into a griffin. You could ask your gm to have it turn into a hell hound instead. You might also be able to call one (With a caster buddy) and set up an arrangement. This is all subject to GM approval but it's worth a shot. I would do it at the level you'd be allowed to have it as a cohort. That would seem to be the fairest way to do it.

If you're looking to go the figurine of wondrous power route, a close comparison would be the serpentine eagle. It turns into a CR 3 creature, same as a hell hound. It shouldn't be too hard to convince your GM to allow an item with similar stats that summons hell hounds, and maybe regular dogs as well, since the serpentine eagle allows for regular eagle or giant eagle. Though at 9100 gp, you likely won't be able to afford one for a while.

Leadership is the best method, as that is what it was made for and your hell hound can increase in level as you do. Level 9 hellknights can summon a hell hound for one hour 3 times/day.
But there's another nice possibility. Once someone in your party is capable of casting 4th level spells, get them to cast Heightened Mount to summon a horse for 2 hours/level, then use Alter Summoned Monster to change that horse into a hell hound.

If you're open to third party material, there's some information on Hell Hound mounts (as well as some other equally cool exotic mounts) in this book here. It's a great book for Cavaliers in general.

.... Sorta... But isn't it more helpful to actually answer the question with the answer the books say?
Not when the books don't help. Leadership has suggested power levels for cohorts at every level, and in my very first post I told him that. But even then, it is still subject to GM approval. You can't just be a level 10 character and say "Oh and I have a hellhound now" without getting GM approval.

Antipaladins can get a permanent summon monster companion at level 5 and hell hounds are listed as an alternate summon monster II. The alignment is all wrong but you might be able to reskin something with your DM.
The Tyrant archetype for Antipaladin in Ultimate Intrigue is basically a carbon copy Antipaladin with a LE alignment.

Insinuator from Agents of Evil would also work (but loses spell casting).

But since the same is true for basically every rule element in the game, it doesn't realm merit special mention in this case.

Yes they do, they directly answer his question....

But you didn't say what it actually was.

That's fine. Still could have answered his question and said that.
