You know, from snippets of your life shared here on boards, I somewhat expected that answer.

Pretty much...

Impus Major-plays a tengu necromancer Blackworm...plays Malak, nuff said

Impus Minor-plays Hooken...also nuff said

Use the force Impus Minor...Alas, we are going to have to replace one of your hands with a mechanical one...the script says so... ;)

My daughter says that Impus Major is really a sweet Hufflepuff who only pretends he's a Slytherin because it makes him look cool.

He could be a cunning Slytherin pretending to be a sweet Hufflepuff who poses for a Slytherin, to fool others...

Confused owl or entirely too True Neutral a student for the Sorting Hat to deal with?

Either will work.

Hey, Nobody!

What did the Impii read when they were first reading independently?

Because Hermione likes a particular type of book when it's read aloud (strong inclinations toward high fantasy but more than a little gothy) but the range of "early readers" is... bubblegum.

How did you deal with that with the boys?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Maybe classical fairy tales and such?

I taught myself to read on a Polish fairy tale novel (published in the last years of XIX century) "Mary The Orphan And The Dwarves Gnomes Brownies".

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Well, Drejk, since I gave her a toy sabre and shield to play with in the pool this summer with her mermaid tail, she's already got a little bit of a start on Polish mythology.

Incidentally, why are there so many damned variations on the Syrenka story? Can't people agree on one version and stick with it?

(And I'm going to look for a translation of that book!)

We were fortunate in that their elementary school library was very good in recommending books. I know that Impus Major started off with the Dav Pilkey books (Captain Underpants) and David Shannon's series of, "No, David!" books. He quickly moved on to the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series. So lots of offbeat humor, outcasts, and generally books with stories and pictures.

As he got older, he got into the "Young Readers"-type series, but that's a couple of years away yet for young Hermione.

I started early on with a book called "Folktales and Legends" published in 19-god-who-knows. It was about an inch or so thick and was a collection of very condensed and kid-friendly stories of old from around the world, but heavier on the Greek and Norse myths.

I don't know if it was ever translated:

author's wiki page doesn't say anything about that.

Here you can see the pictures from the edition I had.

I moved to Greek Mythology (tame version) quite soon after.

Your mind was so prodigiously empty, that you'll require no re-training at all! straight to slytherin, and 5th year work for you!!

Ah, those great GM'ing moments:
"Hey, NobodysHome! Katniss is back after a year abroad in Sweden, and she's joining PsychoGM's game and needs some help developing a wizard. Can you give her a hand?"
"Sure! What are the parameters?"
"Well, it's a low-magic, low-power campaign where we'll never break 4th level and there won't be any magic items."
"...Yep. She's hosed."

::squints skeptically:: That campaign sounds allot like real life...but with less fun and more work.

I think I would memorize create pit and just throw myself into it every chance I got. Better chance at living through the combat that way.

Sounds like our CoCT game. Except it's a Hangry Pit, it's our wizard's default spell, and I'm the one who keeps jumping in.

I may have already asked this, so if so I apologize for being repetitive.

What's your favorite dinosaur?

4 people marked this as a favorite.

I have always had an affinity for defensive beasties: stegosaurus, ankylosaurus, tricerotops.

But I think my favorite is definitely stegosaurus. Just the, "Leave me alone and don't mess with me" critter of the dinosaur world.

It's a punk-ass dinosaur with liberty spikes.

All it's missing are some converse and a Zippo and a Sex Pistols cassette.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Liberty spikes that could kill. As for the Zippo I don't think it could light one without thumbs. The Sex Pistols tape could probably be managed.

A Triceratops with a built-in stereo system would be a heck of a thing.

You REALLY want to turn this into a political thread? :-P

Our current "issue" came about because the founding fathers wisely chose to protect the high offices from the hoi polloi, but then unwisely left it up to each state to determine how to manage their electors. And the parties ensured that state electors have no leeway whatsoever: "If the plurality of the populace votes for Candidate A, then all electoral votes in the state must go to Candidate A."

So it is 100% the states' fault for not implementing the Electoral College the way the founding fathers intended...

(There are a HUGE number of ways to improve this, but all of them would endanger the 2-party system, so I don't see any states implementing any "fixes" any time soon.)

EDIT: For example, California surprised the h*** out of me by passing two reforms that I hated (open primaries, and then 'the top two vote-getters face off in the main election, regardless of party), but what it's done is ensure that the moderates from each party get elected, and we haven't had a statewide shutdown since. (It used to be an annual event as the parties duked it out.)
So it really seems like, "Anything except the status quo" would be an improvement.

Okay, time to squelch this before it becomes a problem. Question: Does anyone else (besides me) who has played Classic Traveller have any plans to "port" it over to Starfinder?

Nope. As I've said in other forums, I just don't care for spacefaring RPGs, so I don't even plan on buying nor playing Starfinder.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Fair enough.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I haven't actually played Traveller, but if anything I'd go the other way. Starfinder doesn't feel like the system to play Traveller. Borderlands, yes, Traveller, nope.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

If you're talking about the Third Imperium, probably not. But many adventures didn't require a setting. And I'd be using the adventures only as starting concepts.

4 people marked this as a favorite.

Never played Traveller.

Not getting Starfinder simply from a financial and time consideration. I do want to follow the lore of it, but I have so much Pathfinder stuff that Aiymi would likely kill me if I were to add another game line to it.

NH, how's NW doing? Everything still ok after the incident?

Thanks for asking!

She had her first follow-up appointment yesterday, and the surgeon said that everything looked "fantastic". They're still waiting on the bloodwork results, but no news indicates the bloodwork was probably fine (don't you love the way they refuse to call you unless the news is bad?).

She still gets tired very easily, but she's trying going in to work today to see how it goes. Unfortunately, that involves crossing the Bay Bridge in rush hour traffic, but in a Prius it isn't that bad, especially considering her alternatives are a 1/2-mile walk from the bus station (undoable) or riding BART (vile beyond usability these days).

So she'll drive in, work as much as she can, then decide whether to come home or go to her Wednesday night game. Considering how tired she's been every afternoon, I suspect the former.

In other news, when it rains, it pours:

  • NobodysWife's best friend broke her foot a couple of days before NobodysWife had her surgery.
  • Her (the best friend's) stepmother then fell and broke her collarbone. With her husband away in Portugal, best friend wants to visit her... but can't because of said broken foot.
  • I just got an e-mail from my brother about a lifelong family friend (I think he started hanging out with my older brother when I was 2 or 3) who has always led an extremely unhealthy, sedentary life, and is now in the hospital with his heart working at only 15% capacity, waiting for a heart transplant. So I have to figure out how to get down to L.A. to visit him among all the other stuff going on.

  • By my count, that's FOUR! I thought these things were supposed to come in THREES, gosh darn it!

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Someone in the crappy happenings office screwed up...three is to be the number of the counting (of bad stuff) and the number of the counting (of bad stuff) shall be three...

Not nearly as serious, but a while ago I got a high ankle sprain falling down the basement stairs.

Couple days later one of my techs calls in to say he's at the ER. He fell off his skateboard and broke his collarbone. Required surgery.

I called up my other tech and told him to watch for falling pianos. He decided that was the best time to put in his two week's notice.

First day after he left the company he calls up and asks for his old job back. The new one was apparently that horrible.

My favorite "minor injury" story was when I sprained my ankle in Tae Kwon Do (a frequent occurrence) one day after my brother sprained his ankle doing something else, and we were both helping with the high school play.

So there we go, side-by-side on crutches, in to help at the school. It was my right ankle and his left, so it was even more amusing. And NobodysWife insists we shared one pair of crutches between the two of us, making it even more fun.

I just got home from work. It's 3am. I started around 645am yesterday. So my question for Nobody is "Kill me please?"

Take a deep breath, and think of the extra money. It always helps me.

I'd love to help, but at the moment California does not have any euthanasia laws, and I'm too pretty for prison.

There are men like him there. I know. I've seen it in anime.

I woke up feeling like I had been hit by a train. All the fun of a hangover with none of the fun of earning it. Got it in the shower, and afterwards felt completely different. I was wet with a hangover.

So... today marks Day 90 of my sobriety, beating my previous "second-best" record. So 90 days down, 200 to go to break my "best".

What's most surprising/distressing this time is that on the previous two long-term streaks, once I got out of the first month it was really remarkably easy; I didn't even think about alcohol unless I had a particularly physically grueling day. This time is different -- I still get cravings at least once a week. It's a serious PITA. On the bright side, having concrete goals ("Stay sober 'til your next physical. Stay sober 'til Christmas") makes it a lot easier to take it one step at a time.

And at some point, hopefully these stupid cravings will go away. Or not. At least I'm dealing with 'em.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Thinking about the long term goal always makes it harder. Keep doing what you're doing with the shorter-term goals. Gives a sense of accomplishment, and if you can make Short Term Goal X, then you can certainly make Short Term Goal Y.

You know we're all pulling for you here.

    Indeed!
