Spells section of the standard character sheet?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Second page of character sheet, top right. There is the heading "Spells" and sub-headings "Spells Known" "Spell Save DC" "Level" "Spells Per Day" "Bonus Spells". Can anyone tell me how this section works exactly? If the first column is number of spells learned in that level, wouldn't each of them have a different spell save dc? Look forward to your answers.

Also right below that is the Domains/Specialty School section. How is that used?

Alright, I'm guessing you are pretty new, so I'll try and make this as clear as I can.

Spells Known * Spell Save DC * Level * Spells Per Day * Bonus Spells

Spells Known:
Some classes, like the Cleric, Ranger and Inquisitor (etc), know all spells in their spell list, and can chose freely which one to prepare and cast.

Other classes, like the Wizard, Sorcerer and Magus (etc), do not know all spells on their spell list. They often start out with a number of spells known (which they chose from the spell list) and then gain extra spells known as they level up in their class.

You can't prepare or cast a spell that you don't know.

*****

Spell Save DC:
Almost all spells allow the target of the spell a saving throw to negate or halve the effect of the spell.

The Spell Save DC is equal to: 10 + Spell level + Casting stat modifier of caster.

So a wizard with 18 intelligence (+4 modifier) who cast a fireball at you would only deal half damage* if you succeed on a Reflex saving throw of 10 + 3(spell level) + 4(modifier) = 17.

*Note that there are exceptions. If you have the evasion ability then you would take no damage if you succeeded on the Reflex save.

*****

Level:
Level of the spells. This is important to spell save dc.

*****

Spells Per Day:
There is always a limit to how many spells per day you can cast. This amount is given from class progression.

Here, check out the Wizard.

Scroll down just a little bit and you'll find the "Table: Wizard". To the right, there is a coloumn called "Spells per day". This is the amount of spells a wizard can prepare per day, which becomes greater and greater as the wizard gets new levels.

At character level 1, a Wizard can prepare three level 0 spells (cantrips) and one level 1 spell. The next level, this Wizard can prepare four level 0 spells (cantrips) and two level 2 spells.

*****

Bonus Spells:
There are ways to be able to cast more spells per day than the amount you can see in the level progression table.

For example, the Wizard with +4 Intelligence modifier would be granted one extra level 1,2,3 and 4 spell because of his high modifier.

Here's the description of Wizard spell casting from the Wizard. It is essentially what I just explained, but it never hurts to read through it, especially if you're still unsure.

Wizard Spell Casting:
A wizard casts arcane spells drawn from the sorcerer/wizard spell list. A wizard must choose and prepare his spells ahead of time.

To learn, prepare, or cast a spell, the wizard must have an Intelligence score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a wizard's spell is 10 + the spell level + the wizard's Intelligence modifier.

A wizard can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. His base daily spell allotment is given on Table: Wizard. In addition, he receives bonus spells per day if he has a high Intelligence score (see Table: Ability Modifiers and Bonus Spells).

A wizard may know any number of spells. He must choose and prepare his spells ahead of time by getting 8 hours of sleep and spending 1 hour studying his spellbook. While studying, the wizard decides which spells to prepare.

Starting Spells (See Spellbooks below): A wizard begins play with a spellbook containing all 0-level wizard spells (except those from his opposed schools, if any; see Arcane Schools) plus three 1st-level spells of his choice. The wizard also selects a number of additional 1st-level spells equal to his Intelligence modifier to add to the spellbook. At each new wizard level, he gains two new spells of any spell level or levels that he can cast (based on his new wizard level) for his spellbook. At any time, a wizard can also add spells found in other wizards' spellbooks to his own (see Magic).

Spells Gained at a New Level: Wizards perform a certain amount of spell research between adventures. Each time a character attains a new wizard level, he gains two spells of his choice to add to his spellbook. The two free spells must be of spell levels he can cast.

About the Domains/Specialty School section...

Domains refer to the cleric class ability with the same name. Domains are divine powers granted to the cleric from their gods, which also grants the cleric domain spells which (s)he can cast in addition to the cleric's normal number of spells per day.

So a player with a cleric character would fill this part of the sheet with his domain spells.

Speciality School refer to the Wizard's ability to chose a specific school of magic to focus on. This specialization entails neat abilities like school powers, and also extra spell slots. There is however no need to write up any spells in those boxes if you're a Wizard, since the Wizard isn't forced to use his school spell slots on any specific spells like the cleric. (The wizard must, however, prepare a spell of his specialized school in the school slot).

Feel free to ask questions if there is anything you didn't get.

Clarification from the above. Spells known is not really a wizard or magus thing. Although they do not have all the spells in their spell book, and need to have them in a book to prepare them, they don't have a limit on how many can be in their book.

Spells Known is a feature of spontaneous casters like the Sorcerer, Oracle or Bard. They don't have to prepare any spells, but they have a limited, fixed number of spells that they know and those are the only spells they can choose to expend their spell slots on.

A first level Sorcerer will know 4 0-level spells and 2 first level spells for example.
