Scorching Ray - 180 degree field of fire

Rules Questions

In a recent session a dispute came up over Scorching Ray's field of fire.

What happened was the GM had a monster use scorching ray and targeted me and the fighter with his 2 rays. Now we were standing within 30 feet of each other as the spell says, only we were on opposite sides of the monster, each standing 10 feet from the monster between us. Like this Diagram.

A_ _X_ _B

X for Monster
A for the fighter
and B for me

We went back and forth over this, as the 2 rays would most likely take down both of us leaving only the third member of the party standing to fight by himself. I ended up winning the dispute and getting both rays burn my gnome into a small pile of smoldering ash. So can scorching ray target in a 180 degree arc?

Yup, as long as the targets are within 30', the requirements are satisfied. There really is no 'facing' in Pathfinder, so someone with iterative attacks can use a bow to shoot 'north' with 1 shot, and then 'south' with the next without any difficulty.

Quote:
The rays may be fired at the same or different targets, but all rays must be aimed at targets within 30 feet of each other and fired simultaneously.

I agree with the whole no facing thing, thats what makes this confusing. If they were iterative there would be no question, but since they are at the same time...

Eh, nothing in the spell says you need to fire the rays only with your hands aiming 1 each, you could fire them with your fingers or your hair or your etc. You could even just have them originate from random points on your body.

As thewastedwalrus said, fire out your ears if you want to.

Even if they're simultaneous that doesn't mean they have the same point of origin.

In fact they don't even have to come from your body. Imagine a halo of fire balls floating behind your head that then speed off in different directions.

Even if we ignored the fact that you are allowed to fire them from any part of your body you want, what prevents somebody from standing with their arms pointed out to either side and firing towards opposite directions?

But either way, there's absolutely no problem with it. Your GM was in the right.

For some reason I thought the rays were fired from your eyes, must have just been the description the GM gave that threw me off.
Well I stand corrected and dead, so that should teach me to challenge the GM.

You should never fear to challenge the GM. The GM is in charge of the game, but he should not be a ruthless dictator. Just make sure that when you do challenge him, you give a solid, logical argument. Once.

I'm glad we could help!
