Summoner sla and metamagic

Rules Questions

Does metamagic and the Summoner's Summon Monster SLA work together? If it does, how does it function? Which metamagic feats work, which don't? My search-foo is weak. I have found various threads saying the two can work together, but no explanations as to how. Would anyone care to elaborate?

Spell like abilities cannot be enhanced with metamagic feats. Most metamagic feats need a "slot cost" to use, which SLAs do not have.

There are feats that can be used with spell like abilities, such as spell penetration, augmented summoning, spell focus, and others. Such feats are not metamagic feats, simply feats that are only useful on magical spells or spell like abilities.

No, metamagic feats cannot be applied to spell-like abilities.

There are a couple of monster feats that normally would allow this (specifically empower spell-like ability and quicken spell-like ability), but they are typically not available to PC's and due to the way the Summoner's SLA scales he never qualifies for them anyways.

Thank you.

...Can SLAs be enhanced with a Metamagic Rod?

No and for the same reasons they cannot be augmented with metamagic feats.

They can't since it's specifically spelled out in the rules that they can't, but oddly enough, without being specifically restricted it would arguably work.
