A mauler archetype could very well learn every language in the world... however...

Certain grunts and sounds can be attributed meaning. With clear answers to yes/no questions.

I think they are more likely to try to stab you with the pencil for even trying to bother it with this junk.

A mauler that is 'speaking', even through writing, is breaking the flavor of them. They do not speak, even if they can, because they don't care for words.
It is a bit silly... yes, but it is in the archetype.
You still have an empathic link, and they can still indicate things such as any familiar can before they gain speak with master.
If you send a Mauler familiar off to scout, and it finds enemies, you it empathy-links you the following "Excitement//Come now". If it doesn't find anything to fight, it comes back and tells you nothing, because if there's nothing to fight, who cares?
