Advice about fun life oracle

Hello, to everyone.

I want to play a forum campaign with some friends. This means the campaign will be very slow. I think I'll have luck if I level up 2 times each year.

I like support characters and healers and I want to try an oracle this time.

I am a newbie in pathfinder. I can see in low levels, the healers have few options, so I want to find a nice way to enjoy the campaign.

We use fantasy level abilities, so I have 20 points to distribute. We only use paizo rules.

I am thinking in an reach oracle with nice channeling. The idea its avoid the frontline, fighting with a longspear, using channel and life link, healing without trigger opportunity attacks.

The easy option its to do a full oracle with high strengh and longspear, like:

18, 14, 10, 10, 10, 14.
Extra channeling, selective channeling, channel revelation. At third level I can learn life link and combat reflexes. This can allow me to do some AoO, even using magic to force the opponents to move (command, cause fear...), and doing trips.

I have another option, that its to think on learn trip maneuvers in the future. For example:

18, 14, 11, 13, 7, 14. (only 7 in sab, so -2 to will saves and perception!)
Extra channeling, selective channeling, channel revelation.

At level 3 I learn combat expertise, instead combat reflexes. At level 4, I multiclass to fighter and learn Improved trip, then I continue as an oracle, and learn combat reflexes at level 6, and later (maybe never) I learn Greater Trip. About casting, I can summon monsters, so everytime I trip an opponent all the monsters can obtain +4 to attack, and a AoO if the opponent stands up.

What's your opinion? I am committing suicide having sab 7? Its a better idea the first build?

Thanks for read this and for your answers!

Hey there.

Here are my thoughts. You're right that for a PbP campaign leveling will be slow. Most PbP campaigns eventually peter out. Your chances of ever getting to level 4 with a slow-moving campaign are small.

It's best to optimize for levels one and 2, because that is as far as you will likely get.

ON LOW WISDOM

I have a wisdom of 7 on my Oradin, Lyric the Singing Paladin. It works primarily because:
a) She's a half-elf and I traded in the skill focus for dual-minded, a racial trait that gives +2 to saves;
b) She now has divine grace and can add charisma to all her saves because she multi-classed Paladin.

I would not recommend a wisdom of 7 unless you have some other way of buffing that will save, like being a half-elf with dual-minded or a half-orc with sacred tattoo and fate's favored.

ON OTHER STATS

A STR of 18 seems high if you are paying for it with a low con. Go for a 16 (or 17, if you think the campaign will reach 4th level) and give yourself a bit more survivability by having a decent con.

ON MULTICLASSING

Multiclassing won't hurt you as much in a low level campaign as it would in one that will reach high levels. That said, I wouldn't multiclass unless what you get out of it is something awesome. Paladin and Life Oracle together are awesome. Paladin improves saves in two ways (divine grace, plus adding a base fortitude save). It also gives you lay on hands as a swift action. But you'll need two levels of paladin to make the dip work.

Fighter and Life Oracle as a combination -- it provides far less synergy.

You can fight just fine as a straight melee oracle. No feats are needed for a reach build, though adding a few can help. I'd take combat reflexes first for attacks of opportunity, and possibly power attack later. This is what I'd recommend -- picking one class and sticking with it.

ON OTHER OPTIONS

A human reach cleric would also not be bad here. Go evangelist if your party has no bard, or pure vanilla cleric and have two domains and a solid armor class. Cleric has painful skill points, but the saves would be better. If you make it to third level, you get second level spells. And... if you leave open spell slots you can fill in with all sorts of useful utility spells from anywhere in the cleric spell list with only 15 minutes of prep.

I hope this helps.

Hmm

Life oracles are fabulous healers. The real trick to them is to utilize revelations for spell-less healing and actual spells for what you want to do with the character. That means that you need to determine a focus - other than healing - for the character. You have done so with a strength based pole arm wielding melee fighter. Great!

Life oracles, despite staying off the front line, need a good CON to be able to use Life Link. I noticed that you sacrificed CON to boost STR. That will really crimp your style as soon as you start using Life Link.

S: 16 D: 14 C: 13 I: 12 W: 10 Ch: 14 (20 pt human)

Revelations: Channel, Energy Body, Life Link

Feats: Toughness (human), Selective Channeling (1st)

That sets up a decent enough base. You can then start enhancing that base with additional resources.

Trait:
- Fate's Favored (+1 to all luck bonuses -> Divine Favor Spells)
- Reactionary (+2 Init)

Spells:
- Divine Favor
- Shield of Faith
- Remove Sickness
- Liberating Command

Be mindful that the 1st 3 levels of being an oracle are fairly mundane feeling. Not getting 2nd level spells until level 4 will feel like a long time, especially in a slow leveling game. Being melee to start, like you plan, helps this a lot. I think you are planning right along those lines.

The Exchange

Half orc is better. Use sacred tattoo, and fates favored together, its a +2 to all saves.

First feat should go to combat reflexes, you can spontaneous heal.

Well unless you want to start as human. Then you can get both combat reflexes and selective channel at first level.

I don't understand well why its so good the Combat Reflexes feat. I know I can move forward when the combat start, and wait the enemies to come, then I can do many AoO, but I think I will easily die if I do this, because I will receive many attacks too, isnt?

Do you think this is a nice option to go forward with a longspear?

16, 14, 14, 10, 10, 14.
Combat reflexes, selective channeling, channel revelation.

Combat Reflexes is good because it multiple come at you you can hit more than one with AoO. Also I believe you'd not be the only one running up into melee and you're buddies would be getting attacks too.
But you can easily sit more in the back doing spellcasting and have the AoO if they decide they want to go for you anyways.

Silver Crusade

I took Fey-Blooded feat with my Oradin. +1 per die on magic healing. It has been very helpful with the life link and channel/Lay on Hands.

I'm not aware of that feat, which book is it in?

or are you thinking of Fey Foundling which is +2 per die?

The Exchange

I apologise, I misread your original post. I thought you wanted to be in front, and not stab from 2nd rank. Both ways are valid ways to play reach weapon fighters.

If so, then take selective channel at first level, skip combat reflexes all together, take phalanx formation at 3. Power attack at 5.

Ok, I just noticed I give cover when attack from behind my pals. That's a -4 to attack and its too much.

Maybe I can fight with the pals using the longspear and also gloves. So after the first turn I can use the gloves and do some damage.

The Exchange

Thats why the feat phalanx formation. No more cover from allies.

Yes I think its a nice option.

18, 14, 12, 8, 10, 14
Extra channeling, Selective channeling, Revelation: channel.

During level 1 and 2 I think will be better to fight with mace and shield.

Then at level 3: Life link and Phalanx formation, so I will be able to use the longspear.

Thanks very much for the advices!
