If their Defense Talent is good, that's another advantage of branching out. Earth/Aether doesn't do the damage of Earth/Earth (with the metal composite blast and all), but having the extra Defense can make you super durable (DR and a regenerating HP buffer stack super well). You have to purchase it, but that doesn't mean it's not potentially worth it.
Obviously, that's less of a factor with Fire. But Fire just isn't a good secondary element IMO. You want to go Fire, you go all-in on the burning of things.
Yeah... most of the time I see fire suggested as a secondary, it is for earth.
Mostly because the magma composite has better infusions than the metal composite. It has access to fire infusions, and I am pretty sure that one long lasting AoE earth infusion doesn't really work with metal (it is a legal choice, but it would require the ground to be metal to work- magma has no such problem).
So yeah- better max damage, with the understanding that you are basically reduced to simple blasts when facing anything with fire resistance.

How does that happen? Is there a trait I am not aware of?

Yes, it's Called Deadeye Bowman. It's a Religion trait for Erastil and allows you to ignore Soft Cover from an ally of only one creature is granting your target Soft Cover.

Thank you, it's in the inner sea gods book, I haven't really read the traits in the inner sea gods because I thought that all of them are reprinted from other books (mainly the three faiths of companion books).
