I am playing a level 5 hunter. I have 800 gp. undead campaign. i have a dwarven longhammer, a scimitar, and a wolf companion. what do i buy? dm says i can get my hammer to be blessed silver for 180. but what else? some kind of ioun stone?

Make your hammer masterwork. Buy some armor. Antitoxin or other alchemical items.

Not sure what "blessed silver" does but if it's tailored to undead it's probably good. 800 gp doesn't give you much to work with as far as magic items go so I would see what mundane items you can get. For a start I would get some vicious caltrops (50gp) in case you need to make a getaway and maybe a net (20gp) if a specific enemy is giving you trouble. Lastly while it's not a spefic item, I would bottle up some some bait in a jar (make sure it seals tight so they can't smell it) for when you need to distract an undead horde.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The basics eat up gp fast: pack, a few empty sacks, an ioun torch, making your longhammer blessed silver, holy water, a few wooden stakes, a sling and some stones (for taking advantage of magic stone, the latter oil you will want quite a few of, especially if you can't cast it yourself). Soothe syrup helps dealing with certain extraordinarily stinky undead. Waterskins, rations. Bedroll and blanket, hammer, at least 1 coil of rope, a few iron spikes, a crowbar, a sledge, a shovel and perhaps a spare traveler's outfit. Depending on climate, you'll want appropriate gear for that too. Gear maintenance kit, grooming kit, mess kit. A waterproof bag, a bear bag to go with it.

Light barding for your companion - leather barding adds +2 armor for fairly cheap even for a non-humanoid and has no check penalty, so lacking proficiency doesn't bother the wolf. A few oils of magic fang. More rations ("chunks of meat"). Access to purify food and drink will go a long way in this set up as you'll probably be making Survival checks to forage food and water in the boonies.

I would recommend ghost salts for your ammunition, but that stuff's expensive on this budget. Let's hope someone can fire up a ghostbane dirge.

I'd suggest 2-3 each oils of magic fang and oils of magic stone. The former for your wolf to nom on incorporeal undead, although the poor pooch will probably get turned into a shadow or something else horrible PDQ. The latter for your sling and the pouch or two of stones you picked up for free. Magic Stone is brutally effective against the undead, many of whom you really don't want to rush into melee with.

Holy water, alchemist fire

Even with all of the things stretching your budget, something to look into is a traveler's any-tool. Almost infinitely useful. Costs 250 though, so likely out of your budget, but if you have someone to craft it for you, its only 125. My group recently had our frontliner use my wizard's one as a shovel to make a trench and wall fortifications out of sand. Perhaps something to look into after the game starts if someone takes up crafting.
