Druid and Hunter Animal Companions

Advice

Ok , the Druid in the group has a wolverine. The wolverine is a medium sized creature at the biggest size of record for a wolverine is just over 4foot almost 5 foot and maximum weight is 77 lbs... Now this is the biggest in the world. If he goes from medium to large. That puts him at 8 foot and 500 lbs... This isn't realistic to me. That's to big.

The Hunter after much whining, mans a sweet history I gave in and the hunter has a grizzly bear now...
The bear is a large size, the bear is 8 foot and weighs over 900 pounds... The max size for a male grizzly bear is about 12 foot tall and about 1700 pounds.

If he goes to Huge the bear will be about 20' or so with a weight of up to 4000 pounds.
This also isn't realstic.

I get the game is fantasey and not reality but I have a small problem with using these pet sizes.

I was thinking giving them the maximum real size...
Wolverine 5 foot and say 80 pounds.

Grizzly bear size 12 foot and say 1800 lbs.

------ I was thinks about skipping the size increases, but give them the bonus that the get for those classes, wolverine Medium to large and grizzly large to huge.

Grand Lodge

Yes, because in a world with dinosaurs and tarrasques, it's too unrealistic to have larger than real life animals. What about magic?

Anyway, this belongs in the advice or homebrew forums. This is definitely not a rules question.

Hm. I don't get the problem here.

Animal companions have their advancement spelled out in the section called Animal Choices and a specific table which can be found in the Druid's class section of the CRB or PRD, respective entries in the Bestiaries do not apply to animal companions.
That said the wolverine goes from size small to medium; same for the bear.
Further changes in size for animal companions can only be achieved via spells (animal growth).

Everything else is fine if it works for your group but is certainly homebrew territory.

Ruyan.

Who said the bear you get as a companion is a grizzly bear?

Just follow the rules laid out for the animal companions and their advancement.

Don't let realism ruin things that aren't broken. If you want to say that a creature is only a certain size that's fine, as long as you allow them to function as they are written.

Wolverines use the badger animal companion statistics, which start as small and grow to medium.

As well the bear animal companion (which is not a grizzly but a black bear) which starts as small as well and grows to medium. Grizzly bear is not an animal companion option.

Edit: Rereading and thinking things over this is my main question:
Are your players using animals out of the bestiary as companion instead of looking up companion statistics under the druid section? Because animals have different stats from animal companions.

Don't use animals out of the bestiary, that's not correct.

I would let players reflavor any animal companion into anything else similar, but they would have to keep the mechanics of that animal. It would be fine to reflavor the black bear animal companion as a grizzly, so long as they're willing to accept that it's essentially a grizzly runt that will never get larger than medium.

You could also reflavor the big cat companion into a grizzly bear, possibly removing the rake ability and replacing it with something like constrict.
