About that, actually...
Quote:
[spoiler]Martial Weapon Proficiency (Combat)
Choose a type of martial weapon. You understand how to use that type of martial weapon in combat.
Benefit: You make attack rolls with the selected weapon normally (without the non-proficient penalty).
Normal: When using a weapon with which you are not proficient, you take a –4 penalty on attack rolls.
Special: Barbarians, fighters, paladins, and rangers are proficient with all martial weapons. They need not select this feat.[spoiler]You can gain Martial Weapon Proficiency multiple times. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of weapon.
You forgot the bit that I left out of the spoiler. The Name is a part of the rule, and it applies to a new type of weapon each time you take it, so yes it does give you proficiency. The Benefit section is simply describing what having Weapon Proficiency does. Again, it is not cleanly written, but the functionality is present albeit by a thread.

So you rule that the Martial Weapon Proficiency feat doesn't grant proficiency, it just removes a -4 penalty...
Because the name of the feat is Fluff, right?
So are you arguing that the Net and Trident feat only allows you to use a Net and Trident to gain the benefit of the feat?
Because the name of the feat matters, right?

Here is an example of why fluff text shouldn't be considered an actual rule:
Acrobatic: You are skilled at leaping, jumping, and flying.
Benefit: You get a +2 bonus on all Acrobatics and Fly skill checks. If you have 10 or more ranks in one of these skills, the bonus increases to +4 for that skill.
Obviously it doesn't apply to any skill checks that aren't leaping, jumping or flying. Wanna move without provoking AoO or balance on a rope? Too bad! That's not leaping, jumping or flying... The feat doesn't apply!
Iron Will: You are more resistant to mental effects.
Benefit: You get a +2 bonus on all Will saving throws.
Obviously, it only applies against mind-affecting effects.
...Or my favorite:
Power Attack:
Benefit: You can choose to take a –1 penalty on all melee attack rolls and combat maneuver checks to gain a +2 bonus on all melee damage rolls.
An strict reading means you can choose to use the feat, but it doesn't say you can actually use it.
Just like I can choose to be rich, but my bank account is still not seeing any extra money.

Endless threads on what the meaning of "day" is regarding "spells per day" and the vast majority of posters argued that it didn't have anything to do with a day (24 hours or how ever many hours are in a day) and had nothing more in meaning than "separated by 2 hour rest periods with ring of sustenance".
I fear if we get 2 or 3 more years of PF under our belt, those same type of arguments will spring up.
This very argument actually happened very early in Pathfinder, and Paizo ruled the opposite than 3.5 (only once per 24hour day, even if our one a plane or planet without a 24 hour cycle. :P
