Gate and paying wages

Rules Questions

So I was going over the spell gate...
I just want to double check, assuming i cast this at caster level 20, i can "summon" any creature with HD equal to or less than 20 and I control it. Do I have to bargin with it also as with planar binding? or is it closer to summon monster?

Anything that comes through the gate does so of, and retaining it's own free will. You have no control over it's actions.

soooo..... the calling part of gate is ignored?

Quote:
Calling Creatures: The second effect of the gate spell is to call an extraplanar creature to your aid (a calling effect). By naming a particular being or kind of being as you cast the spell, you cause the gate to open in the immediate vicinity of the desired creature and pull the subject through, willing or unwilling.

You must bargain with it for its services. It is not compelled to "aid" you as a summoned creature is.

By naming a particular being or kind of being as you cast the spell, you cause the gate to open in the immediate vicinity of the desired creature and pull the subject through, willing or unwilling. Deities and unique beings are under no compulsion to come through the gate, although they may choose to do so of their own accord. This use of the spell creates a gate that remains open just long enough to transport the called creatures. This use of the spell has a material cost of 10,000 gp in rare incense and offerings. This cost is in addition to any cost that must be paid to the called creatures.

So if you call a creature of your deity it might help you if the cause aligns for little pay. If you try to get a creature to do something it is opposed to you may not be able to successfully bargain with it.

Hi kholin, lazarX usually gets spells wrong, so try to ignore him.

You can control creatures that have HD equal or less to your caster level, because the spell says you can. You only have to pay it if you want a service longer than 1 round per level

EDIT: you still have to pay the 10k in material components for the spell.

So in essence, it works more like summon monster UNLESS you want the creature for a longer service

ok, thats what i was checking.
Thanks everyone!!

It depends on what you're calling it for. You can get a single quick service from it (which requires of course that you'd have already spent 10,000 gold in offerings) i.e. a quick combat or possibly casting of a spell that's less than or equal to in cost.

If you are calling it for extended servitude... then you're going to have to bargain.
