Slayer talent and combat trick

Hey folks. My friend is playing a slayer right now, and we've gotten into a bit of an argument about whether he can pick "Rogue Talent" with one of his slayer talents, and pick up Combat trick with it. He argues that the wording of "Rogue talent" supports this, I argue it doesn't.

Rogue Talent: A slayer can select one of the following rogue talents in place of a slayer talent: ...snip... Any talent effects based on rogue level use the slayer's class level. If the rogue talent has a prerequisite , the slayer must fulfill the prerequisite before taking that rogue talent. This talent can be selected multiple times; each time, it grants the slayer a new rogue talent.

Bolding is mine for emphasis. He argues that the wording on that sentence means you gain a new rogue talent, not a 'new rogue talent not currently possessed'. I argue that it just means a new talent, not one you've selected before, ie an "old" talent.

It might just be a linguistics thing since we're not native English speakers, but from what I have been able to see there are a lot of people who have very differing opinions on what that wording means.

We would like the clarification of FAQ on this. Thanks in advance!

If you're asking if he can gain combat trick multiple times? Absolutely not.

Rogue talents may be only taken once each unless otherwise stated. As the hunter must meet the Prerequisites of gaining a rogue talent, he can't do it simply because the Prerequisites also include not taking it beforehand.

Feel free to shake a finger at him and say no.

If he's trying to use Slayer Talent to pick up multiple Rouge talents under the idea that it would allow him to pick Combat Trick multiple times...absolutely not. Not allowed.

Feats, Talents, or any other ability can only be selected once unless they specifically say otherwise. A Rogue could only take Combat Trick once, why would a Slayer picking up Rogue Talents be able to select it more often. No, your friend is trying to use a strained reading of the rules to get him what he wants.

Yeah, a lot of people out there seem to use that reading though. There are a lot of builds and forum posts based on that assumption, which is why I'd like to see an official ruling on it, or just a little tweak of the wording to make it less ambiguous.

I actually sat down and helped my pal change some feats and stuff around, and now his planned build is all good according to the rules. Liberal use of the three Ranger Combat Style feats you can pick up helped a lot.

He can take the SLAYER talent multiple times to acquire multiple rogue talents, but each rogue talent can be taken only once unless it otherwise permits it to be taken multiple times.

For example, he could take the Terrain Mastery rogue talent multiple times, as it explicitly states, and each time it would apply to a new terrain. He could not take Combat Trick or Weapon Training multiple times. Not even a rogue can do that. For under rogue talents it states "A rogue cannot select an individual talent more than once."

The Concordance

He picks up a "new rogue talent" not an "additional rogue talent." Unless the talent says you can take it multiple times, it needs to be a new one, not one already gained.
