Can I make a spell permanent if I cast it with a scroll?

Rules Questions

Hi all! My question is as the subject line says. I am creating a level 13 sorcerer, and would like to have permanent darkvision or see invisibility. However, I would like to avoid having to take those spells, and would prefer to use a scroll if possible.

To specify: I want to avoid putting "darkvision" and "see invisibility" on my spell list, but I will take "Permanency".

Reading the text of the permanency spell:
"You first cast the desired spell and then follow it with the permanency spell."

Reading the text of scrolls:
"Using a scroll is basically like casting a spell."

So I'm guessing... all good? I use a scroll of darkvision, use my permanency spell from my spell list (with the requisite cost from diamond dust). But I am looking for confirmation that my conclusion is correct.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, but I would say that the scroll creator must be the minimum level required to cast the spell being made permanent, as per the permanency spell description.

For example, the caster of the darkvision spell must be 10th, so the level of the scroll creator must also have been 10th.

Thanks Randarak!

Happy to be of service.

I'd take that a step further and say you'd need a scroll with the appropriate caster level. Since scrolls are normally created at the minimum caster level, regardless of the creator's actual caster level, you'd need a more powerful scroll to have the required magical power to meet Permanency's requirements.

In that case, you'd have to spend a bit more money to get the scroll, and may actually have some trouble finding a scroll of an appropriate caster level to use to begin with.

Yes, scroll is fine.

Another way is to be a fetchling and take their race specific feats that can even grant up to the "see in darkness" ability.

Thanks ZZTRaider and CampinCarl9127. I'm going to run this past my DM and see what he thinks.

Reference: Permanency

You don't need a high level scroll to make a staff. Why should you need a high level casting of a spell to make it permanent? The CL needed is for the caster of the Permanency spell, not the spell it applies to.

In fact, a wizard/sorcerer does not get Sanctify Corpse, and only a wizard/sorcerer gets Permanency, yet Sanctify Corpse can be made permanent.

The Permanency spell only calls out minimum CL of the Permanency spell based on the affected spell, not the affected spell's CL.

Lastly, you don't even need a scroll. Just have a friend cast it on you, or pay another caster to cast it on you.

Instead of casting Permanency yourself, consider buying CL 20 scroll so it's harder to dispel.
