Healing options for melee-characters (eg. Amiri)?

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

I'm doing a solo play through of RotR with Amiri and have been progressing quite nicely until the Adv3-5. Barl Breakbones has the power where you take one damage in between his two checks. This has raised the spectre of healing and how there doesn't seem to be a lot that non-spell-casters can do on their own.

Four allies - Poog of Zarongel, Father Zantus, Shaman, and Svevenka - provide healing (although the Shaman's is only 1 card and he's AP5).
The Healing Potion.
The Staff of Minor Healing
A few locations have healing When Closed effects.
Mokmurian's Club

The problem with the Healing Potion is that it is a Banish effect. You have to keep finding it to use it. So if you want something more than 1 card heal, you're really reliant on finding Poog and Father Zantus. I've been unlucky in that Father Zantus hasn't shown up and I missed the roll on the one time that Poog did. My hope is to banish an ally somehow so that I can pick either of those out of the box when I fix my hand between adventures.

Am I missing ways to heal?

Sovereign Court

In Runelords, that's about it. Once you get to Mokmurian's Club, you'd be amazed how little you are concerned about healing. Especially as a Barbarian who is going bash the skulls in of everything you see to heal herself.

I don't know how quickly you aim to close locations, but as a single player I'd recommend not usually closing after a henchman if you are looking for specific cards.

Can Amiri take a spell card feat? If so, take one and get a cure. As long as you don't acquire any spells during the scenario that rewards you the feat, you can get the cure from the box. After that, just be sure to never acquire any spells (which shouldn't be too hard for Amiri). Your cure will be banished when you play it, but after the scenario you can choose it from the box again if you don't have any spells.

No, Amiri can't take spells.

You shouldn't need that much healing even up to 2-player. If you do, you're probably being too aggressive in exploring. You have 30 turns - even if you had to dig down every single location, if you pass all your checks you should be able to do it without using a single ally or blessing to explore.

Are you running Amiri solo?

Running into same concern with Merisiel. Picked up Father Zantus (huge help). Not a single heal potion since start.

My only advice is slow down on the discards which is what I did with Meri, or start running with a duo (Kyra or Lem work well IMO with Amiri).

Or if you can knock out Valeros and "find" his Tankard.

Good luck!

Opportunistic banishment and box-pulling is the best way to get rare cards that stubbornly refuse to show up. You can also opportunistically select your card feats to do the same. Hawkmoon tried to do that to get back one of his Damiel's potions, but too bad - Letter of Marque, which we need for the rare spells in S&S.

I haven't been closing locations quickly - unless I'm at a place like the Academy or I've already mined the location for things I'm interested in.

And I haven't needed healing to date - 3-5 with Barl Breakbones and his auto one damage was the first scenario where it came up. And only then because I found him in each location. I'm just thinking of some of the BYA/AYA damage that is starting to arise. And since Amiri's +d10 power buries a card and she can't recharge weapons like Valeros to use their additional power, I find that a lot of my weapons and cards end up in the discard or bury pile. Either that or I start taking chances, thinking "D10+D12+4? That should handle a 14 combat check." :)

Thanks for the advice.

One of the many reasons Radillo was so much fun. Went through a vanilla play of RotR with her and finally got to see all those AP6 boons that always evade us. <3

I'm not sure Letter of Marque ever got us anything we actually wanted, but Damiel kept it around through almost all of S&S. At the very least it buries itself, slimming down his deck even if you don't get the boons you want.

Personally I think the staff of minor healing is the best bet. As soon as my Feiya found it during her solo playthrough of RotR she felt a lot less fragile.

Yeah, RotR without a healer is a countdown until you can get a(/both) staff of minor healing (hopefully before Attack on Thistletop! (or whatever it's called? (you know the one that people always seem to get stalled out on)))

Ha ha! I was looking in the archives for another post and I saw Rerednaw's exact same post about this and I even answered him. I guess my kids are right - I am getting old! :)

Letter of Marque was the only reliable way I was able to get some of the better spells for Alahazra and Seltyiel (man, I loved that Aqueous Orb spell on Seltyiel). There were just so few locations with spells in them. Weapons, items, allies, armor were no problem, but magic was rare - and valuable.
