Firearm ammunition

The Exchange

I'm looking at playing a gunslinger in a setting with advanced firearms.

Looking at the price of ammunition, though, it seems impossible. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like the cost for a single shot is 10gp for the powder, 15gp for the metal casing, and 1gp for a single bullet. that's 26gp for a single shot at level 1. that can't be right, can it?

It's shot and bullet OR metal cartridge. So that's 15 gp, not 26. Then you halve that if you make your own ammo with the Gunsmithing feat.

If you have Gunsmithing you can craft them at 1/10 of the price.

Depends on the type of ammo. Cartridges is 50%.

Don't forget the rarity of guns affects the price as well. In a Guns Everywhere game, ammo prices are 10% of what is listed.

The other option is to start with an old weapon and switch to the revolver (and more expensive ammunition) when you can afford it.

Past the first few levels, regardless of advanced or regular firearms, you're going to be buying/crafting cartridges anyway. The paper versions are only a little cheaper than the metal ones. And as the Casual Viking said, you only need the cartridge, not cartridge+bullet+powder, so it's 15gp - halved for crafting.

Playing with advanced firearms also reduces the price of both firearms and ammunition. I'm on my phone, so posting links is hard, but it's explained on the firearms equipment pages.

Talk to your GM and see which rules he's using for his setting. The assumption for advanced firearms is for the prices to be reduced.

Not necessarily.

The "Commonplace Guns" level suggests making Advanced firearms available, but at the listed prices. Early firearms are 25% of list.

At the "Guns Everywhere" level, even Advanced firearms and ammunition are 10% of list cost.

The key point is for the OP to check with his or her GM. Many don't realise that the prices have recommended changes based on the ubiquity of firearms in their setting.
