Half-Elves: Elven Spirit question

Rules Questions

Dark Archive

So, the feat Elven Spirit is PFS legal. What it does is give half-elves the Elven Magic racial trait that the elves have. It then says alternatively, you can pick any racial trait that elves may exchange Elven Magic for.

My question is, in PFS is this last line (italicized below) invalid due to the ARG restrictions, or can I make a Snowcaster Half-Elf and take "Desert Runner" with the feat?

Elven Spirit

Although you are of mixed heritage, you are closer to your elven relatives and the magic in their blood flows freely in your veins.

Prerequisites: Half-elf.

Benefit: You possess the elven magic racial trait of the elves, granting you a +2 racial bonus on caster level checks made to overcome spell resistance. In addition, you receive a +2 racial bonus on Spellcraft checks made to identify the properties of magic items. Alternatively, you can instead gain any one racial trait that elves can exchange for the elven magic racial trait.

Special: You can only take this feat at 1st level. If you take this feat, you cannot take the Human Spirit feat.

Oh, didn't even dawn on me that it's in the APG too... So Desert Runner is in the APG AND the ARG, I should be able to use it as a APG sourced ability, correct?

Grand Lodge

The feat does not allow you to bypass PFS restrictions. If Elves can't take a trait for PFS, Half-Elves with this feat are just as restricted.

Thanks for stating the obvious without answering the specific question. Although, as I said the ARG restrictions only apply to the ARG feats/abilities as far as I can tell, so since Desert Runner is in the Advanced Player's Guide, it should be legal.

If a mechanic appears in more than one source, the status on the latest source applies. If something is allowed in the APG but forbidde in the Race Guide, than it's forbidden period.

So because they reprinted it all verbatim for convenience, trash the previous book completely?

It's far from "trashing the book completely" to change the mechanics on one lousy trait.

Well, that section.

Sorry, I just really want to play a 2nd character but it seems like everything I can come up with is restricted in some way that causes me to feel like I am stuck in a cookie cutter. I know, I know that isn't the case, but it's how it feels. I guess I am just too used to being GM, which is why I want to actually play but it's driving me insane because I'm too used to being GM (none of my friends but me run Pathfinder much less Pathfinder in Golarion which is the setting I like nowadays) where my policy is pretty much if it's in a Paizo published book and not 'evil' then sure.

Oh and also, elves CAN take Desert Runner (it's just Darkvision they can't take, so that's why the Arctic subtype is not allowed, or are you further restricted from even saying you are a Snowcaster elf and can't even take anything related to them?) The question is can a half-elf with the Elven Sprit feat take it.

The answer is yes. Unless you see text that says otherwise then they have the same limitations and access.

As to the rest... welcome to network play. It means having restrictions that home games don't worry about. However you should know out of all the network games I've played from Living City, to Arcanis, Pathfinder Society Play is about the most open, certainly the fastest to accomodate new source material.

Wait so now you are saying that a half-elf can use the Elven Spirit feat to get Desert Runner, as long as elves can take it? I'm confused.

And on the network play thing: I know, I am not meaning to complain so much as explaining my frustration when I am having trouble understanding the restrictions and what they even are and how they apply.

I was going from your earlier text that indicated that elves themselves were barred from the trait.

Plain and simple if the trait is allowed to elves than it's allowed to half-elves with that feat.

anything trait that is legal for elves to take would be legal for the feat. People making this comment aren't checking if the elf can take Desert runner or not. But they know that if the trait is legal for the elf it's legal for the feat.

Oh, awesome! Thanks :) Sorry for all the confusion, yeah I shouldn't have said Snowcaster, I should have just referenced the trait itself. :)
