How does Rapid Shot work?

Rules Questions

Dark Archive

i am fairly new to pathfinder, so this is probably a bit of a noob question, but how does Rapid Shot work, especially with a Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger) wielding a musket? does it work with the full-round action reload speed that muskets have if you lack rapid reload?
i was thinking about getting ether Rapid Reload, Rapid Shot or Opening Volley as my feat for 3rd level in PFS.

Rapid shots lets you get an extra attack when making a full-attack. Now if you can't reload fast enough (free action) to use extra attacks then it'll do nothing for you.

I suggest rapid reload

To follow up, Rapid Shot will do NOTHING for you unless your reload speed is a free action. So if you don't have Rapid Reload, then I would not even consider Rapid Shot with your musket.

As for as Opening Volley, are you planning on REGULARLY making melee attacks with this character, or will he prefer to keep his distance and shoot enemies whenever possible? If he WANTS to fire a shot, drop the musket, draw a sword (or whatever), and then charge into melee, then Opening Volley might be a good idea. If not, then I wouldn't bother with it.

Which leaves you with Rapid Reload. You definitely want it before you reach level 6 so either take it now or take it at 5th level. If you wait until 5th level, then you need a different choice for your 3rd level feat (not Rapid Shot that you couldn't use and not Opening Volley unless you're also a swordsman). Do you already have Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot? Or, if you DO take Rapid Reload at 3rd level, you're probably wasting your time because you won't have any way to use it - sure, reloading is now a free action but you can never fire more than once per round so it won't really matter except that you can move more easily during combat.

Unless you have access to a gun with more than one barrel? In that case, Rapid Shot rises to the top of my list for you.

oh, ok, so it's completely useless to Musket wielders, since i'm pretty sure the fastest musket reloads can get is standard action.

AT 3rd level you can get Fast Musket which lets you reload a musket like everyone else reloads a pistol. Then Rapid Reload works for you.

Wait, you already HAVE Rapid Reload, don't you?

except i'm a mysterious stranger rather than a musket master

Since you already have Rapid Reload, and if you take Fast Musket at level 3 as your deed, then you can take Rapid Shot as your 3rd level feat and fire two shots per round right now.

Oh, my bad. I failed at read.

Maybe dip it?

you can't dip it because it's the same class, just a different archetype.

i think i might just get Weapon Finesse, since my melee weapon is a rapier, and i've got a high dex mod.

Unless you can reload a musket as a free action, its a bad idea to use it as your primary weapon. The best way to get around the reload clause if you want to shoot a musket multiple times but can't get to a free reload, is make multiple muskets, so you can shoot but draw drop and fire with quickdraw, or double barreled muskets. Or both.

With the recent Ultimate Combat errata firing both barrels takes a standard action.
