So I have a character with no interest in Scribe Scroll who would really, really like to get their hands on Spell Mastery and I'm wondering... what do you guys think of swapping the two?
I'm curious what reasoning people would have for or against [aside from the simple 'it's not RAW' argument. Obviously it's not RAW [though I do wonder why, it was probably just a simplicity thing nobody felt like bothering with in the transition to PF, rather than adding an additional choice to level 1 Wizards.]

Ask your GM. Personally I don't see a problem with it... but keep in mind that when you take the feat you can only take it for spells you already have available to you... which means the first level spells and cantrips you start with.
Since PFS does not allow crafting, they have Wizard characters take Spell Focus instead. I would think that this would be a choice that would serve you better in the long run than taking spell mastery so early.

In part the character is paranoid of losing his spellbook, and in part I'm also taking Flexible Wizardry.

In the time I've played and GMed variants of this game since the 80's I've yet to see a wizard lose his spellbook before he lost his life.
You DO understand that all that spell mastery gives you is retention of a number of spells UP to your INT bonus? That it does not increase as you level up? That it's not a backup for your spellbook?

Paranoia is seldom legitimately logical.
As for Spell Mastery, at levels 1 and 2 it really is a backup spellbook, a wizard of these levels certainly isn't going to need to have more than 4 spells available to prepare.
Lastly it's the gateway to Flexible Wizardry which I want to take at level 1.

Ehhh, I'm not really seeing anything in that worth giving up progression as a Wizard in a good Arcane School or with a solid Archetype.
If I really feel the need to re-structure my Mastered Spells retraining will do it for gold rather than levels.
Granted it would be more appealing if there were certain Druid spells I really wanted, but none come to mind right now.
Spontaneous Spell Mastery is kind of cool, but in general I'm pretty content with Preferred Spell and later Greater Spell Specialization. [It would be different if Spontaneous Spell Mastery were a bit less limited in uses per day, M-Arcanist Level or even 1/2 M-Arcanist Level per day would be more enticing.]
