Damage reduction from two sources.

Rules Questions

We had quite a debate at our last session. We were fighting a lich with DR10/bludgeoning and magic. I thought it meant a weapon had to have BOTH qualities to overcome the DR.

Others were certain that a weapon need only have ONE of the two categories to overcome the DR.

I tried to find an example of a monster with the word "or" in between two damage types, but I could not.

Who is right? The word "and implies both criteria are required. Could someone show me the word "or" in some beast's description? It would be greatly appreciated.

Quote:
A few other creatures require combinations of different types of attacks to overcome their damage reduction, and a weapon must be both types to overcome this type of damage reduction. A weapon that is only one type is still subject to damage reduction.

Right from the CRB.

Is that in the Core? Somewhere in additional rules?

Core Rulebook! Sorry, I hit submit post instead of preview so I posted it without adding the source.

Both. The Draugr has "or."

Thanks so much!

There are definitely creatures that have the "Or" label and there are creatures that have the "and" label.
If a creature is labeled with "and" it means that you have to qualify for both to pierce the damage reduction!
If they disagree with that, ask them to show where in the rules it says that "and" means "or". Or ask them to find a quote in the rules that says to pierce a damage reduction with "and" in the wording, that you only need one of the types. Hint: They can't because they are wrong.

Remember that there are several ways to get around most special damage reductions: A +3 weapon counts as the material it is made of AND cold iron AND silver. A +4 weapon ALSO counts as adamantine for damage reduction purposes. A +5 weapon ALSO counts as any alignment.

Granted, to date I don't know a way to circumvent "bludgeoning" other than using a bludgeoning weapon.
There is however a feat called "penetrating strike" that will allow you to ignore 5 points of damage reduction, meaning that if the creature has 20 damage reduction, then he'll only have 15 against you.

Weapon Versatility does it.

There is this spell also Versatile Weapon. Helps vs bludgeoning, cold iron, piercing, silver, or slashing.

or

Sanctify Weapons. Helps vs evil outsider but is highish level.

Edit: got me to slow^

Okay that is an awesome feat.

Sczarni

Also Paladins.

They can slash and pierce their way through a Skeleton like nobody else!

For a quick list showing a few monsters with either or or and in their DR entries, just go to Demons.

Demon List from Bestiary 1:
Babau have an OR for their DR
Balor, next on the list, have an AND for their DR
Dretchs go back to an OR
Glabrezu have just a single type of DR, neither AND nor OR
Same for Hezrou
Mariliths, next on the list, have an AND for their DR
Nabasu are another OR for DR
Nalfeshnee are a single DR
Quasits are another OR
Shadow Demons are another OR, although they have a special form of DR in addition, incorporeal (and the combo sucks)
Succubus are another OR
Vrocks are a single type, so no OR or AND.

Devils, as well, include both OR and AND types of DR.

For both groups, OR is usually lower CR creatures, and AND is higher CR creatures.
